Ideas on first revolver?

Ok...so I bought a Glock 19 awhile back and really like shooting it, but also thought about getting a revolver just to have something different. I did shoot a .22 revolver when I was learning to shoot, but decided to go with the Glock. Any thoughts on which one to go with? I honestly do not remember what .22 I shot, but I'm thinking maybe it was a Ruger? Anyways, thanks. :)

Hi Sara,

May have been the Ruger Single Six (.22 single action revolver). My father let me fire the Ruger when I was a little tyke, he still has it:D . I hope to visit my Dad soon and let my 9 y.o. Son give it a try :)

The Single Six is too cool for words - go for it and don't look back.

Its always good to have a .22 handgun....cheap ammo and easy to practice with.
Its also hard to go wrong with a 4" barrel "service type" 38/357 revolver like a S&W 64 ,65 or model 10 or 15. They can be found as LE trade ins from places like J&G sales etc for $250-275 with a ton of life left in them.
My last one was from a dept of corrections trade in somewhere and had been shot very very little.
id recommend a round butt model if you have smaller hands as it will probably fit your hand better than a square butt model.

Yeah...I was thinking maybe the ammo for a 22 would be a lot cheaper, so that makes sense if I want to shoot it a lot and not go broke. lol I might go to a gun show sometime and look around there. The only gun place real close to me is too expensive!

Ive taken several classes on firearms and how to shoot, safety, etc, etc. I don't know a WHOLE lot about guns, but I know enough on how to be safe with them. I took the time to try and learn what I could about guns and definitely took the time to have a professional teach me how to handle them safely.

I have been wanting one of these:

CzechPoint 9231
Fires the same ammo as your G19 :)

There are a lot of 22s out there. I would suggest a single action "cowboy" gun. There are many out there, and some are very cheap. The most popular, the Ruger Single Six is one of the heaviest, however. I have a Colt Scout, which was a not-very-durable gun colt produced in the 60s, but that is light and fun to plink with.

If you want a double action revolver, I would suggest a S&W, a model 34 or 63 in J-frame (small), or model 17 or 18 in k-frame (medium). However, they are much pricier than the single action revolvers.

justa, first decide if you want a single action revolver, or the more modern double action design. If it is strictly for range use, the S/A would be fine. If you want a revolver that would be more like what would be used for self defense you would want a D/A.
If your choice is for the D/A the next thing to consider size. Do you want a smaller gun that would be of similar dimensions as a concealable revolver, or something more on the line of a service, or target gun.
I'm sure with the way you handled your decision on getting the Glock, you will have the same diligence in finding the right revolver for you.

Count....Interesting you should poist the Czechpoint link. I've been pondering the 4" .22 revolver myself.

Sara: As if the name I post under doesn't give it away, I am VERY partial to the Ruger Single Six. They're great guns, and, being .22s, recoil is at the bare minimum. You'd be hard pressed to find a better SA .22 revolver. Gitcha one...you won't regret it!

Corona - ya they are importing .22 revolvers also, but I'm not so sure about them, they say that they're an alloy frame, from Alfa-Proj's site:

The light alloy frame contains steel casts and inserts that assure always friction of steel on steel to maintain the maximum life cycle. Any impact of shot is transmitted from the steel parts to the frame purposefully on large surface to assure maximum life cycle duration

I'm wondering what alloy they use.

Well it sounds like the Ruger Single Six is definitely something I will check out. My plan is just to have something fun to practice with - not necessarily to carry or conceal or anything like that. :)

Excellent choice Sara, and contrary to someones point of view that you shouldn't buy guns just to have something different, that leaves room in your upcoming collection for a double action revolver. The excellent way you have started out, believe me, it is an upcoming collection! LOL

Tell me about it. I bought a Hi-Point C9 just to see if they were as bad as many claim. Only to find out in my case they aren't. Love the thing. Very accurate, and 100% reliable.
I don't think your to the "just 'cause" stage of buying a Hi-Point yet though LOL!

Hello justagirl38,,,

The suggestion of a Ruger Single-Six is a valid one.
It's probably the strongest cowboy style single-action .22 on the market.

If you are wanting a double-action police style revolver,,,
There are 2 S&W revolvers in the small j-frame,,,
They are the blue steel Model 34,,,
And the stainless model 63.

If you want a slightly larger K-frame revolver,,,
Model 18 is the 4" Combat Masterpiece,,,
Model 17 is the 6" Masterpiece.

They will be pricey but are of the high quality to match the price.

The gun on the left is a nickel plated 4" Model 34 with round butt grips,,,
The gun on the right is a Stainless 4" Model 63 with oversized grips.

The gun on the left is my 4" barrel K-frame Model 18 in .22 LR,,,
In my (not-so) humble opinion it's the finest .22 revolver ever made.

The gun on the right is my 4" barrel K-frame Model 15 in .38 Special,,,'
It's nice having an identical pair of guns,,,
One chambered in .22 LR and the other in .38 Special.

Happy hunting.

I have a H&R model 939 22lr revolver. I've taught my wife, son and daughter to shoot with it and be safe around guns. If you live in a big city check the local pawn shops and you might be surprised at what you run across. That's where I found the H&R. You can also go to your LGS (local gun store) and ask them if they have a nice 22 revolver in their inventory. Want ads in the paper or even the forums. If your concerned with buying from someone locally ask them to meet you at the LGS and let them check the gun for you. If the seller is on the up and up he'll be happy to meet with you. Just remember "guns are good habit forming". Shoot safely and enjoy this great sport we all love.

I guess I'm guilty of buying a revolver just to have something different. Actually, I bought my Ruger Security Six to shot .38spl wadcutters out of to help with trigger control when shooting my semi-autos. It has definitely helped with that. Not much recoil with .38spl wadcutters.

Here is my Ruger Security Six:
