Idaho CCW Questions

I just applied for my CCW in Idaho, just a couple of questions:
1) How long does the background check typically take? I've been told by the sherrifs office 3-4 months. Is it done by the state or the feds?

2) Is there such a thing as reciprocity of CCW permits between any states?

Thanks in advance.

Brian --

I know they say it takes quite a while, but in my case they had it done in about three weeks. This was just a month or two ago, so I don't reckon it's changed too much since. As far as what records they check, I don't know, but I presume state and federal records, run by the county Sheriff Dept.

Reciprocity -- Idaho welcomes everyone else's, hardly anyone else respects ours. I reckon that's 'cause it's a fairly "liberal" shall-issue policy.

As far as our neighbors go, I've been told Montana cops are fairly lax about it, and Washington cops like to pull over Montana boys for kicks 'cause "they're all carrying, so it's an easy bust." Just anecdotal, take it for what it's worth.

You in Ada county, or elsewhere?

Brianidaho, that is too long for the check to take. Sounds like your Sheriff is jacking you around. 60 days should be max, but if that is the way the Sheriff handles it, you have to wait. (Vote in a Sheriff who actually believes in the Constitution, next election.)

Yes, the background check goes through the Feds.

Idaho honors ALL other states' CCWs.

Best of luck. J.B.

From the way they spoke at the sherrifs office, it sounds like a CYA thing, they said they had to send off to Boise to process, who in turn forwards for federal check. I suspect (hope) it will be much quicker. I'm up in Coeur d'Alene, our sherrif generally seems to have the right attitude. Already had a backgound check for EMS certification, was hoping they would apply that, no such luck.

Idaho Code § 18-3302 governs the issuance of a CCW. It provides that the maximum time is 90 days. It also provides that the sheriff must submit the prints & info to the state police for the background check within 5 days of your application. The state police then have a max of 75 days to get it back to the sheriff.

You shouldn't have to wait anywhere near that long, but be prepared - I know that they were probably extremely busy during June through August because teacher certification requires background checks for all first-time hires in every school district to get their teaching credentials issued by September 1. You'll probably have about 4-6 week wait total, unless the sheriff decides to drag it out if you're a "newcomer" to the area.

Even in left-leaning Moscow the sheriff there only made you wait 3 weeks.

Idaho has a good CCW policy. CD'A is pretty 'liberal' area for lack of a better term. The sheriff may be a closet elitist. FWIW, as a more or less native Idahoan, I can tell you there are plenty of old timers that throw a "snake gun" in their pocket when heading out the door and don't bother with permits.

Brianidaho,
Thanks for the post. I will be a CDA resident (Carlin Bay) in the near future once I can cut the Kalifornia umbilical.

I continually try to update myself on the local stuff. Lots a luck in your life and your ability to "acquire" a CCW. In Kalifornia, it is next to impossible cause "We don't want the nasty things in our State" according to Gov. Red Davis (and all of the other socialist politicians).

I heard that Idaho is one of the few states in the union where you can have a loaded long gun in your car. Idaho is also an NFA state. Does 1+1=2 ? Can you legally have a loaded NFA weapon in your car?

Honestly officer, I keep the MP5 in my car in case I get carjacked. :D
