Hi!

I've decided on purchasing another piece, but this time i've set my eyes on one of those compact PPK clone - Bersa thunder products, either in 22lr, .32 or .380. I already have a H & K usp, so this one would be my CCW. Before i buy it, i would like to hear from those who's had experience with it. Any inputs would be much appreciated...

If you do a search I think you will find what you need. If I remember right most of the input on the bersa has been positive. Mark

Do a search on Bersa Thunder and you will find a lot of helpful posts. Because there have been so many lately is probably why you haven't recieved many replies. For my 2 cents, check out the FEG SMC-380. This is a PPK clone (almost, dimensionaly identical, but the firing pin system has been updated and improved) made in Hungary and is excellent. It is better made than any AMERICAN made ppk and has a very good reputation. Mine has NEVER jammed (probably 5-600 rds), and is very inexpensive while being very well made. The finish is not as nice (mine is a light parkerizing). But I would trust my life to it. I cannot say that about a (again, american made) Walther. The Bersa's are "ok" but I have heard about quite a few problems with breakages. They don't "feel" right to me either. Look at a Sig 230 or 232, they are kinda big (about like a Bersa) but EXCELLENT handguns. Buy the way, I got my SMC brand new for $150 (on sale).:D

Bersa Thunder

I bought the Bersa Thunder 380 Looks like the one in the picture you linked to for my wife as her CCW, 2.5 years ago and have been very pleased.
It has about 1000 mostly reloaded rounds through it with no problems. It is very accurate and has been very reliable. Also handles +P ammo, For the $189.00 NIB that we paid, I don't think we could have gotten a better gun for the money. I have a friend that has the walthers PPK and we tried an accuracy test with them. The bersa was just a tad more accurate. IMHO

I had a part in teaching a woman to shoot.

Her boyfriend had bought her a Bersa in .380 caliber. I had seen these pistols at local gun shops and dismissed them, as the price was less than $200.00. However, every time we went to the range, I was impressed with the little Bersa. It was inexpensive, but also accurate and reliable. In all the times that we went to the range, her Bersa only jammed once. (And that was when it was new.) I have heard that they are made from something undesirable. I don't remember exactly, but I might have been told zink. I would ask and read up if I were you. I don't think that a zink pistol frame would last as long as a steel pistol frame.

I had a Thunder 22 and it was very ammo senstive and inaccurate. sold it for a Ruger 22/45.

And the metal thumb safety on the range's Bersa .380 broke off while a guy was shooting it.

No thanks. Cheap guns made from pot metal.

They rock

Yeah but a P230 costs what two Bersas do and in my experience the extra clams don't get you better reliability. The little Bersas are very reliable.

Bersa are good little guns for the money. They do not distribute the .32 in the U.S. I have never seen a .22 Bersa. The .380 Bersa I shot was a neat pistol with no problems. I wish I could get my hands on a .32.

B-T-W Taurus's millinium is coming out soon in .32. Should be a very low recoil pistol. (It is out in .380 now) plunker

Thanks everyone!!

You've all been very informative, especially about the issue of breakages. I certainly would put durability as one of the more important factors in selecting a unit. I'll look around for the FEG and SIG units, see if i like 'em...

thanks again... :)

One other option to consider is the FEG-PA-63. Similar to the SMC-380, but alloy frame for light weight. Two-tone color (the slide is blue, frame is alloy-steel color). 9X18 Caliber (9mmMakarov). I have seen them for around $100 in Shotgun News and the usual Internet sites.

For the money, an HS-2000 is getting great reviews.

Or save you money and carry a 9mm, 40SW, or 45ACP so if you have to defend against a crackhead, you'll have the firepower necessary to go home alive and unharmed.

.380 may slow them down but 3 seconds is all they need to kill you.

9mm is the floor for me for self defense rounds. Like a Glock 30 with a (13) round hi caps with 200 grain hollowpoints doing 600 fpe into the target.

The .380 round is a shorted 9mm case with a smaller 100 grain bullet. No thanks. Not with my life on the line.

Save up and be smart.

JT;
Actually his post states that he already has a USP so his major caliber need seems to be filled for him. He is looking for a compact .380..

In .380 get a NAA guardian.

Or to save your money, get a KT P-32 and be done with it.

That Bersa broke right in front of my eyes. Not a nice thing to happen if you really need it and oh snap . . . hold up BG - my hammer just jammed and won't cycle the round into the chamber. Please don't hit me until I shoot you . . . .

Stay away from those cheap guns. You will dump them inside of a year and lose 50 percent of the purchase price. And piss off your favorite gun dealer because he has to take it in trade to keep your business.

How about a Raven or a Lorcin for you ex-girlfriend? For those people you relaly care about.

When your life can be on the line, just spend the darn money and get a real gun! No fakes. No clones. The real Coke!

Bersa Thunder

I purchased a new Bersa 380 this month. The slide is steel and the frame alloy. I have shot over 300 factory rounds,Remington UMC, WW USA and Federal 90 grain classic HP plus and misc rounds. The first two magazines, one round in each did not feed. after that, all have chambered and fired. Accuracy at 10 yards is excellent, the double action resonable and the single breaks very good. My experience is positive and carry for CC.

I'd come to that realization already, jt , when kentucky rifle mentioned that parts of it are made from zinc. I certainly wouldn't want it falling apart on me when i need it most.

I'll add the KT P-32 to my candidates list, and see i if like it....

Thanks a lot. :)

PS: I did some research on that HS2000 u mentioned, just out of curiosity.... Well.... it seems rusting is a common concern. . I hope they 1) resolve that problem, and 2) come up with a smaller version. They sure have some very fancy features that i like.

Thanks again.

What zinc?

Bersas don't have any parts made from zinc. The slide and guts are steel and the frame is alloy. The only pistol with a zinc part that I know of is the cheapie SW ultra compact that a zinc slide. Don't let the price or place of origin fool you, Bersas work just fine. If you don't mind a little more weight look into a Makarov. They're incredibly accurate, ammo is cheap, and they're very reliable.

I have a Bersa Super Thunder 15 rounder. Won't accept reloads but will eat all my FMJ and hollow points. Nice little gun. Did have a problem with the disconnector before but a little fixing did it. Great gun for the money.
