ID card "swiped" at 7-11?

Last night I stopped at a local 7-11 to get some smokes. The lady behind the counter asked to see my ID, I held it up for her to see and she snatched it out of my hand. I thought that she was trying to get a better look when she swiped my card down a reader on the side of her cash register. I gave her a WTF look but decided to not cause a scene. When I got home I called the manager of the store to find out what they were doing. She said that all it does is verify that the ID is real and not a fake. Texas DLs have a magnetic strip on them and I don't know what kind of info they get off of it. The reason I ask about this is that I am worried that they might keep a record to show that cigarrete sales were to adults and have my address on file somewhere. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Yes, Oregon has that also. Your ID card has your information on the strip that is the same as on the front. Your BD is what they were verifing, also the condition of the ID (fake or real). Go there on your BD and have the card swiped, the machine will play Happy Birthday for you (oooh, ahhh). The one bad thing about that stupid strip is that when it goes out (errors out due to usage and/or it gets deleted) then they will call the cops on you saying that you have a false ID card. Then, you have to go and get a new one (ID) and that costs the same as a replacement due to loss or it being stolen.

Well, the first thing I did upon getting a license like that was to expose that strip to the strongest magnet I could find. For an extended period. Wife's too. And if any bar code ever shows up on it, I'll mutilate that as well.

Civil disobedience. Works for me.

I had never noticed that little strip myself until I got this year's hunting license. They scanned my DL to process my license. I was like... hmmmm... Why didn't I notice this before???? A magnet might be a good idea but then you DO have the issue of people thinking the DL is fake if it dosen't scan.

Still thinking....

We don't have that in WA, yet. The question that comes to my mind is: is the fact that a reader or scanner can't decode the info on your card probable cause for an officer to detain you? Your paperz . . . ze are not in orda . . .

What if it's the reader or scanner that's malfunctioned?

I agree... a magnet might do the trick... in my opinion, it's just one step close to a national ID card. I didn't USED to be this paranoid, and I blame part of it on TFL ;) I'm NOT a conspriacy theorist, but I do believe in trends and gradual movements. And I wouldn't be surprised if we see a national ID card pretty soon. Swipe it at every purchase. That stuff scares me... and it's all to reduce crime... for the children.

I can understand that the police and government would want this technology, but 7-11? Why in the world would they have/want/need this type of information? I am not their friend or loyal customer. I don't give my home info out for a good reason and it irks me that they think that they have the right to know stuff about me I don't want them to.

I stopped shopping at 7-11 after I read here about them firing that guy for disarming a would-be assasin. Y'all should do the same. They are obviously up to no good.

We have them in Minnesota too. The magnet used to work, but now they must be digital, as I tried serious demagnetization, and it still read fine for them. VERY disturbing, as we don't know what information IS encoded, or if it is read only...

They have those in CA, too. I immediately ran it through the magnetizer/de-magnetizer at work a few times. I've never seen it scanned anywhere, though.

If running a magnet doesn't work, run a pin across the surface repeatedly, scarring it. That'll do the trick.

And I was never this paranoid either. I'm just mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more.

Wow so that magnetic money clip I've been using instead of a wallet since mine got swiped is useful for more than just holding my money and ID together then? :)

Just an idea for anyone who has to deal with this sort of thing. We don't have the magnetic strips in WA yet.

I live in ohio and have a cdl. With the cdl they put a sticker on the back of the license. Mine ends right under the black strip, but the sticker is a little crooked so part of it did get covered. Seems covering it or something would work as well as destroying it. Of course here in ohio no one scans these, yet. :p I hate this type of crap. Gives me no faith in my elected officials.

PreserveFreedom, You're right. I usually don't shop there for the same reason, but I was in a hurry to get home and it was the only store around that was open. I won't be going back.

We have those stupid strips here in TX also. Although I have never had anyone swipe mine since they have had them. I guess the cops can now swipe them and run you through the computer faster than having to wait for the dipatcher to do it. There are a few things that worry me about this though. 1) To get a DL you MUST now show a SS Card so I assume that your SSN gets input into the system ie your little mag stripe. Now 7-11 has the SSN and who knows what else. 2) My phone never stops ringing between 5 and 9 PM with "OUT OF AREA" callers trying to sell me crap. Now 7-11 can add to their bottom line by selling my personal info to more A$$holes who want to call me during my dinner hour. This is why I have gotten into the habit of telling store clercks the number to the local PD rather than hand out my phone #, zip code, address, name...

Time to ban certain guns..
Oh their not turnnig them in
Hmm thats okay just look into our NICS database the NRA helped us get passed and look up the addresse's for all of these type guns.
Red flag the person's names who bought these type guns as they scan their ID to "makes sure their valid,or as proof of age for ciggarette's or beer" well know their area
and move in knowing theyll be home soon or where to look for them.
After we knab a few the rest well come in or be taken in for 'invalid/fake' ID's.

No it couldnt happen and 75 men women and children were not burned to death in church for daring to shoot back when faced with submanchine guns.
Feel free to call me a conspiracy theorist,
but compared to federal control and intervention that we have now anarchy dont look so bad to me.

Well, at least the social security number is optional in Minnesota. (non-commercial)

just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you.

An alternating-current electromagnet ( in motion) demagnetizes much better than a permanent magnet. I still have a tape-eraser left over from reel-to-reel days. hmmm.I also once scrambled an ATM card by accident with a BIG alnico (5 lb.) I have,
crankshaft
paranoia suits me just fine, as they just might be really out to get me!

Yep, it has your info on it. Cop's use it for their car computers. Fakes are easily made of these also.
