Ok. I give! What's an ICQ number which is sometimes found in a personal profile.

Incursion, I don't think icq is owned by AOL, they have their own free instant messageer called AIM. Since both services are free and can be set up so you receive nothing from either icq or AOL, it does not really matter who owns them. AOL receives nothing from those who use AIM. It is kind of neat to use an AOL service for free to talk about firearms.

My ICQ number is 548744. The latest ICQ number issued is 77,238,252 (as of this post.) ICQ was not originally owned by AOL. As you can see, I have been using it for some time. I will not boycott ICQ for that reason. However, do as you wish -- but I'll keep it for now.

You don't have to pay for ICQ, so using it isn't really a big deal....

Hey, glad somebody asked. Now let me get this straight, if I visit ICQ.com and buy or get issued or whatever a number, I can do instant messaging without AOL as my ISP?

Answer to the last posting. Yes. You can even get the AIM (not at the icq site however) set up if you want and have nothing to do with AOL except using their free service. I prefer icq because you can send messages to others when they are off line.

You still need an ISP....whether it is AOL or one of the bazillion others out there. I have an ISP....Icontech....I chat on mirc, ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger. You can chat with anyone on AOL....however you do not have access to "all" of the chat rooms.
