I will build a M1 Carbine from scratch, with a little help from the smitty......

I will pick up three of those M1 carbine recievers tomorrow(one for me and the other two go to my work buddies) from a little armory bussiness here in my home town. They will be brand new Springfield receivers. The smitty told us to get a certain video that walks you through each step of assembly, and we will let him do the head spacing work and a few other things that were not qualified to do. I have never done anything like this before and could use any support out there thats available and willing. I have a few questions? 1) Who sells barrels and who should I buy from and what type ? 2) does any Company out their sell 'kit packages'? 3) am I getting in over my head or can a mechanically capable person get this project done with a little well focused enthusiasm ? 4) What type of tools should I be sure to have on hand before I get started? Thanks for any and every reply. I will need all the help I can get. Thanks. John

Although these guys aren't building M1 Carbines (that they speak of, anyway), lurking over at the website FN FAL under the Gunsmithing section of the forums wouldn't be a bad start.

A lot of those guys live the lifestyle of building their own guns, and much expert advice and novice failure watch-out-fors can be gained just by browsing the boards there.

I personally haven't seen an M1 Carbine kit, but almost everything you need can be had here: http://www.e-gunparts.com

My best advice I can give you? Make sure you have an already-built Carbine lying around near you when you build your own. Sometimes, knowing what to do next can best be gained by looking at another gun.

If you're going to do this, buy Jerry Kunhausen's book on Gunsmithing The M1 Carbine. EVERYTHING you need in info is in there. Money well spent. Buy at Midway or Brownell's.
