Last Sunday my better half and I were killing some time by driving around in my old district. We were going down a street when a Sheriff pulled in behind us from a side road. After a few minutes & about 2 miles he hit the overheads and we pulled over. I watched him as he walked up, he stopped for a second at the rear of our truck to look at something (I thought mabey my tag).
He came came up to my window and asked "Who shot your truck?"
I said "I did."
With a sudden puzzeled look he said "Ahhh....O...K"
I said "One day I was really bored & it's a really old truck."
He said he saw the holes(2) and just wanted to make sure everything was OK. He never asked to see a license and was totally cool. In fact when we told him what we used he kind of laughed.
I work in a place with lots of cool "stuff" and one day I built a compressed air gun. I started blasting 1 inch 1/4x20 bolts thru 2x4's and drew a small crowd of co-workers. After blowing up soda cans and bricks with it we started to look for more "interesting" things to shoot, alas my poor old truck became the target. After putting a bolt thru the tailgate I pulled a round from the clip of my USP 45, removed the bullet from the case. Loaded the bullet into the barrel(1/2" pvc) of my air gun and sent the round on it's way...Presto! One bullet hole.
I dont know whats more interesting the fact that I got pulled over or my "gadget".
(PS If there's any interest I try & get some pictures up.)
First off dont try this with regular sch40 or 80 PVC folks, the white accumulator and other fittings you see are NOT regular PVC! This is special high psi stuff that even we have blown apart!
Anyway with that said....... WOOOHOOOO! IS THIS THING FUN!
I start by loading the projectile down the muzzle with a wad of corn starch packing penuts to get a good seal. (barrel is about 8" long-still working on optimum length) After closing all the valves I charge the accumulator to 300psi. Originaly the gun was fired using the blue valve by hand but were ready to start our run up to 400psi so for safety I've added a 24vdc solenoid valve. But I'm not getting enough flow so I'm waiting on a larger one.
We have'nt checked the actual velocites yet but on paper were pushing almost 3000fps with a 150gr projectile. (the truck was shot with a 230gr .45fmj at 150psi, it went thru the tailgate and into the cab where it stopped in the firewall next to the brake pedal. Yes I underestmated! Yes I was pissed.) The projectile is a stainless steel 1/4x20 bolt, we use lengths up to 3" and vary the weight by adding nuts.
I'm also working on a sabot round but I forgot to take a picture so I'll get that on later. But with what were using now this thing will shatter a cinder block after going thru a 1/8" sheet of mild steel. It is loud but the sonic crack of the round going downrange is'nt masked and sounds awsome. As far as recoil there is just a real smooth "shove".
When I have time I'll work on some more pix and if I ever get the digital camcorder I want I'll put up a link with some action shots.
P.S. As far as being rednecks sorry to disapoint you...were just a bunch of lab techs at site "X" out in a SW desert with waaaaaaay to long of a lunch hour.
