I want to see a law..

Where any elected or appointed official who knowingly lies on any subject is immediately removed of his post, fined his entire salary that he has received to that date, and put before a jury. The way I have worded it, it has a chance of being enacted and then gradually mission-creeping to 'willful distortions'. ;)

Real interesting thought.
If you can be Felony imprisoned for lying to a Federal Officer, even if the mistatement was not intentional, then it would only make sense that a Federal Servant should be imprisoned for.....

Oh, never mind; if we did that the whole system would break down.
Heavens to Betsy!

I honestly can't believe that we get crap like Mcain-finegold and we don't get anything that punishes polichickens for lying. Seems to me that would solve the whole problem we've had with them for a few centuries.

Forcing politicians to tell the truth - er, at least to not lie? Never work - besides, who'd run the government after the sentences started being handed down? ;)

The only problem with this suggestion is,.... this law is intended for the same people who have to pass it! Yikes, that's like letting a criminal sentence himself.

Wonderful idea though.

Never happen in this World.

Unfortuanately with such a law no person would ever accept election or appointment to governmental office. The perks and pay are not worth the risk of being successfully falsely accused by a political adversary. Such a law would result in anarchy. I know some think this desirable, but they are a very small unrealistic minority.

Perhaps anyone attempting to bribe a government official should be placed in a sack with a ravenous weasel and thrown in the Tiber. With no one making bribes, government officials would have less motivation to lie.

"He bribed me!"

*joe q citizen is thrown in the river*

That sounds more open to abuse than my idea. Mine would only apply to politicians regarding mass correspondence with mass witnesses. TV addresses, speeches, form letters, websites, etc. Personal communication, they could lie all they want unless it's videotaped or recorded, then it's fair game.
