I want a Redhawk in 45. Is that too much to ask?

With Ruger pumping out as many bottom feeders as they can to feed the frenzy there seems to be no time available to make one little old Redhawk in 45 Colt. I'd say nice things about them if they would let that one wee tiny revolver head my way but it looks like it's simply not meant to be.

Once again, I hit a local gun show. Granted, this was one of the smallest shows in DFW but I didn't count a single Redhawk of any caliber in attendance.
I was considering a 429 just to get me by but none of those appeared either.

I did see a freak selling a 555 pack of Winchester 22 LR at $124.95 and burst out laughing but that's a story for another thread.

Anyway, am I nuts for lusting after a Redhawk in 45? I already have a SRH in 454 but I'm seriously considering trading it in on the little brother.

Yeah, I know there are a couple on Gunbroker but that's not the place to find a deal.

you should have bought one when they did make them. it must not have been a big seller as I don't think they make them anymore

I originally bought the 454 as a double action platform for my heavy 45 Colt loads. It works great but it just doesn't fit me. I don't care for rubber grips on revolvers and the sorbothane insert on the Hogue Tamer style grip is too narrow. Heavy loads punch my hand like I'm holding a hard kicking popsicle stick.
I've held a couple Redhawks and feel that grip shape fits me better.
Sadly, the few replacement grips for the SRH are extremely expensive and hard to find.

Are you aware that Super Redhawk and GP100 grips are interchangeable? GP100/SRH grips are made by Hogue, Pachmayr, Altamont, Eagle, and Badger just to name a few.

I've run the replacement panel GP grips on my SRH. It's somewhat better but doesn't fix the problem.
Pachmayr, Hogue, and Altamont don't make wider grip panels. I've got the widest thing Hogue offers now. Badger changes the angle of the grip in a way I don't like.
I've got fairly large palms and have trouble finding grips that fit me well. I need a wider grip.
As an example, my Encore pistol fit me fairly well. Most people complain that it's far too large in it's stock pistol configuration. I could blast away with that 308 all day long.

Have you considered Hogue wooden grips? I too have large hands (I wear an XL size glove) and I find the Hogue wooden grips to be very comfortable due to their generous palmswell. Also, they have no sorbothane insert which sounds as though is the root of the problem with the Hogue tamers.

Another option that might work is Eagle's Rosewood oversize grips. These look to be similar in shape to S&W target stocks and, judging from the pictures on Eagle's website, seem to have a good amount of palmswell to them.

I'd love to find a Redhawk in 45 Colt. As big a Ruger fan as I am I despise the looks of the SRH as it is a great looking gun except for what looks like a pipe they threaded into the end for a barrel. Nice squared up edges with a piece of pipe hanging off the end, yuck.

I'll keep my SBH Hunter kicking out magnum level 45 colt rounds and keep my eyes peeled for a Redhawk.

I, too, wear XL gloves. They're usually a bit short for me. The palm bottoms out before the fingers do. Most XXL gloves are made for fat hands, not just long ones. The finger tips get a little floppy too.

I called Hogue and spoke to them about their grips. They told me the wooden grips are no wider than the Tamers. If my Tamers were as wide as the palm swell through their full length they would be fine.

I haven't been able to lay hands on Eagle grips.

I'm with you on all of it feets, except the extra large hands; I can wear a large glove alright.

Assuming a good fit of the grip panels, the standard Redhawk grip suits me just fine for loads up to 250 grains at 1300. for 300+/1300+, the old Butler Creek Redhawk grip worked real well for me.

To my thinking, a short 45 Redhawk cut for moon clips would be about the perfect do-anything revolver. Like you, I should have bought one before they were stupid high and/or scarce.

One Redhawk in .45 Colt NIB a couple years old with the 4.0" rather than new production 4.2" (Canada legal) barrel in the case at a local to me gun dealer.

Tag one it says $950.00, been on the shelf a few months. PM me if you want the shop's number.

They are rare as hen's teeth among all the .44magnums. I'll have to wander over to gb here directly to see how bad they are now. I paid I think $860 or $870 for mine in April 2012.

$950 is high in my book. I'm willing to bet that thing would pull a better price in Alaska than it would in Texas.

Given the current state of affairs, that's not outrageously high for Indiana and I wouldn't think there'd be any more demand for such a gun here than there is in Texas (our critters certainly aren't much bigger).

They still make the Redhawk in 45 colt with a 4.2" barrel. I have never been able to see one actually for sale new, but ruger list them as still being made

A 454 = 45Colt

Not that the Redhawk in 45 colt is a small gun, it is still quite a bit smaller than the super in 454

I have a Redhawk in 45 colt with a 5.5" barrel (this barrel length is no longer made). It is by far and away my most cherished gun. I too have lusted after a Redhawk in 45 colt for a long time. About 3 years ago I just popped in a local shop and they had a used 4.2" for sale for $550. The only Redhawk 45 colt I have ever seen in person I didn't have that much cash in me (store waived tax if paid with cash) so I left to go to the ATM and then foolishly stopped by somewhere for lunch. I came back about an hour later with cash in hand and it was gone.

About a year ago I walked in a local shop and they had a used one with 5.5" barrel for $500 OTD cash. I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice so I asked him if I could put it on layaway for $124 (what I had in my wallet) he said yep and wrote it up. I returned 10 mins later, after an ATM run, and paid it off.

This gun is every bit what I was lusting after. The 5.5" barrel is a great balance. The gun is a handloaders dream revolver. I too wish Ruger would up production of the new ones. I would jump on a 4.2" in a heartbeat

Ya, I love my 7 1/2 Redhawk but would love to add a 4.2 model. It is like hen teeth around here. I have never seen one in person, only online pictures.

I'd love to get a new Redhawk in 45 Colt with 7.5" barrel to go with my 5.5" Blackhawk. I wish they still made them. The 4.2" Redhawk, if you could ever find one, is too short for me. I will probably just end up getting the SRH in 454 and use it solely with 45 Colt. I agree that the pipe sticking out of the frame is unsightly though. If they would just cast a top rib into the barrel to fill in between the frame and front sight it would be a much better looking piece, IMHO.

Petah, I appreciate the tip but that gun sold months ago. It teases me every time I see it on their list.

PetahW,

Ya I just called about it and the guy said it sold about a year ago, what a tease. I would pick up a Redhawk 45 for $450 all day long and being Sunday and fathers day it was not even something to think about.
