i just bought a nice used 1964 browning A5. i got a good deal on it and i reallyliked it so i could not pass it up. BUT it came with a full choke. i plan on using this gun for grouse and phesants. full choke is a bit tight for this.

can i have a gunsmith bore it out or put in choke tubes or something? or is the gun too old for this? i dont want to ruin my cool new gun. but i want to use it :)

ASSUMING your barrel has the wall thickness, either route - opening the fixed up a little, or having someone tap and thread for choke tubes is doable. If you are talking Eastern Grouse where the shots are close poke and hope ones and then Western Pheasants where they are far away, I would opt for the interchangeable tubes - that way you can use a Cylinder or Skeet for the grouse and a Modified or tighter for the pheasant

Go to browning website and..

locate a service center near you.

THe browning choke mark for FULL is "*", a single asterisk. more ope choke juat add a "*", the service center should be able to handle that.

Alternate route, a 1964 is still a Belgium, BUT you can buy NOS Japan barrels that drop right in and get tube with it. a bit pricey but good solution.

I, too, recommend going with Briley. The one time I didn't, the local gun shop did a poor job of installing screw-in chokes. You didn't mention if you just want to open your existing choke or do you want screw-ins installed -- Briley can do either.

I agree with leaving the original barrel original. It will maintain your gun's value in case it is a nice gun. Therefore, as another poster has already stated buy another barrel either in the choke you desire or with the capability of multiple chokes.

To me, there is just the image of an original well used A5 an a turkey hunt (before steel shot requirements for duck or goose hunting).

Mike Orlen did a fantastic job of threading and installing choke tubes in my Franchi AL 48. The other guys are probably correct about maintaining the original barrel to preserve your gun's value but I think you will really enjoy having the changeable chokes.

Mike's price was very reasonable and the speed of his service was excellent. I think it was something like 9 days from the time I shipped my barrel until it was completed and returned to me.
