I took an anti shooting today! (Rosie convert!)

An 18 year old girl friend (just a friend that's a girl! ;) ) of mine is a Rosie fan and had never shot a gun before. She was scared of guns.
She moved in with me for a little while. I started by allowing her to see me carry a gun from my safe to my bedroom to get her used to it. Then, I started carrying my gun around the house. She got used to seeing it and used to the idea that guns do NOT just "go off".

Finally one day she just piped up and asked me "when are you going to take me shooting?". Well, I jumped at that.
Today we went.

I took her to the cleanest indoor range I new of, gave her inner ear plugs AND outer ear protection to muffle all the noise. I rented her her own lane (actually, she paid for it).

I started with my Sig 226 9mm. I showed her the rules, especially to ALWAYS keep the muzzle pointed down range. I had her dry fire the Sig a few times, and explained it's functions. Then I loaded the mag. I showed her how, and made her load up the gun and make it ready.

She pointed it down range, started shaking with fear, and squeezed off a round. She hit dead center of the human target, just as I expected. She let out a cheer. She had conquered her fear!!!

She finished off the mag and then she reminded me of the girl on that Tom Cruise vampire movie who turns and says "I want some more". :)

She started loading up mags and off she went, shooting away for a hundred rounds or so.

Then, after a while of shooting (I kept a close eye on her) she had tried out the Kahr 9mm and the Sig quite a bit.
I told her that she "had to shoot the .45 before she leaves, just for bragging rights".
She asked me if it kicked hard. I said, "no, but a lot of people think it does, so they will be impressed." (I had also made up some nice soft shooting .45 loads for her).

I dug out the stainless Colt Gov't model and showed her how it worked. She loaded it up, and fired a magazine into a very tight group. That little girl fell in love with the big .45!
She shot that thing for over an hour straight, at least 300 rounds or so, and she worked up to my full power loads very easily, all the while keeping really tight groups of like 4 inches at 7 yards (not bad for her first day!).
She is just totally in love with the 1911 and plans on buying one now.

I must mention that she also shot my Glock 19 last (with a 3.5 pound trigger connector) and she shot her tightest group of the day! So, the Glock worked really well for her, more accurate than the 1911, but she really loved the 1911 anyway.

So, I converted an anti today. I did my part for the week ;) Now she thinks Rosie is an idiot and she wants to buy herself a gun. All that from just two hours of shooting.
It is amazing what a little enlightenment can do. Her fear and bias were completely based on ignorance. Never having even held a gun or shot one, she feared and loathed them. Two hours of shooting, and she is an instant gun nut ;)

What a wonderful thing you did. So many pluses. Brought another shooter into the world. Did it so she had fun and got the potatoe chip reaction ( can't eat just one ) Sounds like the more she did it the more she wanted, "fatigue be damned, I want to shoot till there ain't no mo ammo"

Good on ya

Good Job. I wish I could convert an 18 year old "girlfriend" LOL ok that was shameless I know. Congrats.. Now you need to take her to the local gun shop and show her what is avalible.. See what she likes.

C'Complex,

. . . . and who knows, you may have also initated an "educational chain" that saves her from rape, grave injury, or even murder.

Great going Cassandra!!! I'm working on one, but it's going to take awhile.

Futo, shame on you - saying that before me.

Bravo Cassandra. It only takes a few pulls of the trigger and they are hooked.

One down, ? more to go...

must be most aware of change in the air - however slight -
lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness."

<<CassandraComplex: "So, I converted an anti today. I did my part for the week" Yes sir! You sure did, & THAT'S the way to do it. I never feel so good as when I teach a kid, or "fence sitter" to shoot. This summer I'm working on a group of four, including the local sherif's son (hey why not -- his dad supplies the ARs with .22 conversion kits from the station, AND insists on his son cleaning his own rifle). Like someone already said -- "one at a time," CONGRATULATIONS, good work! :) Rik
