Feud Over Barking Dog Ends In Shootout

Suspect Barricades Self In Home, Shoots Officer

FULLERTON, Calif., Posted 10:50 a.m. July 23, 1999 -- A barricaded man was found dead in his home Thursday after shooting a Fullerton police officer, who was saved from injury by his bullet-proof(1) vest.

Officers went to a home on the 2800 Sequoia Ave. block early Thursday morning on a report that someone threatened to shoot and kill a neighbor because of her barking dog(2), reported CBS 2 News.

When police arrived, the suspect "threatened to shoot and kill the officers, and then barricaded himself inside his home," Sylvia Palmer, a spokesperson for the city of Fullerton told a news wire.

The SWAT team threw tear gas into the home, and when entered the home, they found the suspect, 62-year-old Fred Briegel, face-down in the home.

Police do not know if the man died from the wound he got outside or if the fatal shot was
self-inflicted, Palmer said.

Palmer said police, who had arrested Briegel in 1997 on an assault with a deadly weapon charge, knew that he had at least three handguns and a shotgun in the home.(3) According to the wire service, Briegel also threatened to shoot his son earlier this week. His son has(4) a civil lawsuit pending against his father.

(1) Bullet-WHAT vest?
(2) Hey, I'm not much of a dog person myself, but that seems a bit extreme.
(3) So, even after being arrested on a felony charge, no one tried to take his guns. Hmmm.
(4) I think they've got the wrong verb tense there.
