I think I want a Kimber Ultra Carry?

I have been drooling over the stainless Kimber Ultra Carry but cannot decide if I should get the 40 or 45. I have a Glock 27 so I have an idea of the recoil. I don't have a 45 and don't have a range that rents guns near me. I just want some opinions as to how the two calibers compare in recoil and accuracy.

The 45 is a little easier to shoot in the same gun because of the lower velocity / pressures. The other half of recoil is the weight of the gun. Your Ultra Carry will have 33% more recoil than my gold match because of this. However, I won't be "carrying".

Another version of the same gun is the CDP-Ultra. Have you considered this one? It looks nicer and is a very customized version made for carry. Oops, in re looking nicer, I thought you were getting blued...

As to the two calibers, compare the weight of your existing gun and that of the new one. If they are similar and you are comfortable with .40, maybe it would be best to stick with buying and stocking just one kind of ammo. Others will opine that making a 1911 in .40 is blasphemy. ;)

I've got a .45cal CDP Ultra Carry. I think that you'll find the .45cal UC has a snappy recoil, but would guess the 40S&W would be fairly similiar. One of the main reasons I went with the CDP over the standard UC was its checkered front strap, which gave me a firmer grasp on the pistol. IMHO, it's a great pistol.

40S&W or .45cal? All I can say is that you don't gain an additional round in the mag by going with the 40S&W ... it's SEVEN rounds with both.

re CDP PRO

And I'll include an Alessi Talon IWB holster and a box of 230gr FedHS. You'll need to find the bottle of Scotch on your own<G>...e

I've got a blued one in .45 with rosewood grips and Ashley Express sights. I like it a lot. Since it has an alloy frame, it's a bit lighter than my SS Compact, so the recoil is a little snappier, but entirely manageable. It's scary accurate for such a short tube. Go for it!;)

I have the Kimber Ultra Carry in 45acp. It is a great gun and I would recomend it to anyone. However, I also try to stick with one type of ammo. Since you have something in 40S&W I would go with that.

According to several gunsmiths, the .40 is not as reliable in a 1911 because the round is too short. It doesn't feed properly, unless the overall length of the cartridge is close to that of a .45.

Putting a 40 in a 1911 is like special ordering a Corvette with a really hot V6 that "might" be as good as the V8. Why?

The purpose of the 40 frankly is to fit into guns that are 9mm size. You've already got the room for the 45, it's a great round . Other than a a saving a buck or two per 50 rounds I see no advantage to the 40 in this situation at all.

PS, I think the Glock 22/23/27 are the best duty/carry weapons available so don't think I'm bashing the .40.

I have the Ultra CDP in .45ACP. I was unlucky to get a lemon, but after 2 trips back to Kimber & 1 more to a gunsmith, it finally works smoothly.

It is a beautiful gun though and I have put on ultra thin grey carbon fiber grips to thin it down even more. I think the colors go better as well.

It do not like shooting 230gr. loads out of it and have dropped down to 185 gr. Golden Sabers for practice/carry. I feel that this is still a good effective load for this sized pistol.

i had a .45 ultra carry and loved it. recoil? not an issue, and i'm not a big guy. like it was said before, frighteningly accurate for such a short barrel.

and I have put on ultra thin grey carbon fiber grips

Where the h-e-double hockey sticks is everyone finding these carbon fiber grips?

I've looked all over the net and can't find any. (particularly interested in a set for a Para Ordnance P10-45)

It's not illegal to make or own a 1911 in anything other then .45 ACP, but it should be. It's not natural. The Kimber Ultra Carry in .45 is an excellent machine: get one.
