I think I got a good one(FAL)

I just picked it up today, after a little shopping around and an hour aggravating my dealer, I picked up a Century Arms STG-58 on a PAC imported Imbel Reciever, with actual Imbel markings on it, unlike the L1A1 rifles at the shop which had Imbel stamped in the same typeface and size as the century arms markings. The barrel looks new, in fact none of the parts sans hammer seem to have much wear. The Gas Piston needs to be replaced, as it is a two piece stainless steel job, but that is easy enough. The trigger is a little heavy, but smooth. do you think cliping a loop off the trigger return spring would be wise, perhaps reducing the resistance? anything else I should look for? I always hear that Century arms Fals are Crap, and i agree if you are looking at the L1A1 rifles, one had it's sight canted and it's gas cylinder was at an odd angle to meet it, and the other was so rough both inside and out that i think it lived through an apocalypse. The butstock is too long for me, does anyone know of an aftermarket butpad or something to shorten the length of pull a bit? are their any things I should look for as far as parts go? Any add on's recomended, also does anyone carry an original or copy of the austrian bipod that will fit into the metal handguard slots? Dont' mind my rambleings, I've always been a m-1a guy, but i think that fal bug done bit me in the arse (BTW the gun is soon to be exported for fathers day, it's not mine... (Buy a fal, it's a six pound sledge with a pistol grip on the back of the handle) My own words, I think i'm going to eat them as I want one now though, perhaps one a little lighter if possable, in either case with a 1300 cealing on the price tag, any suggestions, do you think lightning could strike twice and i'll get another good century arms gun?) Thanks ahead of time.

Don't clip a coil, it will increase your spring rate. Go to your local hardware store and find a spring that is the same length and diameter with fewer coils and/or smaller diameter wire.

Tapco and Federal Arms should have replacement bipods.

Range Report

I just got back from the range(about five hours ago) hey i had to clean it! all i can say is wow. The two magazines i have need new springs, but otherwise it ran perfectly. accuracy seemed around 3 inches or so, at least with the iron sights. it could probably use a re-crowning, as further inspection noted some machineing marks at the end of the muzzel, but that's simple enough. the sights were about 6 inches off at 100 yards, a half turn of the set screws adjusted it to center. The front sight needs raising, as the 500 yard setting was the zero for 100, but before i get creative i'll take it to a 200 yard range to check where it shoots. Do any of you guys know where i can get a thinner butplate for a STG58, it is too long for me, but is perfect without the rubber butpad at all. does anyone make a short one or do i have to figure out how to make one? Bottom line, If you want a decient fal and can't afford a DSA, shop around for a Century arms STG58 and look it over to make sure everything is in order. if you get luckey with a deal and a good gun jump on it, you won't be sorry!!!!

one afterthaught, is it normal for the metal handguard to heat up quickly, after 40 quick rounds i couldn't even hold onto it anymore?

It's not hard to make the metal handguads too hot to comfortably hold.

The easiest way to solve this problem is to buy a set of DSA plastic handguards. These are "drop-in", look good, and most importantly, do not heat up. Price is around $60. And it counts for a "US-made" part.
