I think I got a good deal here....Any thoughts?

I'm a novice hunter in my 30s. I have been shooting my whole life but only been deer hunting twice before. This season I decided I was going to have my own rifle and not have to borrow one. I had been doing some research online, but then was at our local Cabela's (Huge Hunting/Fishing Store), and came across a used rifle there I thought might fit the bill for me, so I bought it. It's a Remington Model 700 in 7mm Rem Mag, manufactured as I later discovered, in 1971. It is in good condition. It has a Bushnell Banner scope in Weaver rings on it. The scope is 3-12 x 40, and appears to be likely produced in the late 80s or 90s. I paid Cabela's $400 before tax, which is right about I was able to spend. Sound like a good deal or about right? Just curious what others might think. Thanks.

I would guess that you got, at the very least, a good deal, if not an outright great deal. The scope is nothing special (it will do the job, btw), but the rifle is nice, and I personally love the 7mm Rem.

Congratulations on the new gun, and welcome to TFL!

just about right on the price.

Cabela's tends to have reasonable prices for used firearms.

You can pay less at your local FFL --- but you'll need to haggle.

Incidentally, I found my local Cabela's - while not willing to haggle on price - would often be willing to throw in a gun case - or something similar to that.

You will need to pratice with a 7mm rem mag. Make sure it has a good recoil pad on it. Don't over do it at first (maybe 5 shots) till you get used to the recoil.

Great deal and good luck on your hunt.

This is truth. I like to play on my 10/22 between groups, just to be sure I am not flinching, and let the barrel cool. Them 7mm's heat up quick!

I picked up a box of Remington "Managed Recoil" 140gr Core-Lokt the other day and will give them a shot (no pun intended) at the range later this week.

Does anyone have any good referrals as to where I could locate a good modern-day recoil pad like the Remington Super-Cell that would fit on an older Model 700? Per Remington's website their Super-Cell fits their 1999 and newer 700s.
