I Started A Grail Gun Search: S&W Model 27 With A 3 1/2" Barrel

The more I see pictures of these the more I want one. In fact, I now believe that this configuration is the most attractive revolver I have ever seen. The problem is they are getting out of range for me as far as price is concerned. I ran across a nickel finished one in rough shape last year for $750. The problem was that it was nickel (I don't care for nickel) and it was rough.

I may have to sell my 1937 38-44 Heavy Duty if I can get a decent price for it and set that money aside to grab one of the 27s on Gunbroker.

Since you are already familiar with the N-frame in .38, I'm sure you'll like the 3.5 inch Model 27 in .357, but in your search, don't close your mind to a 5-incher or a 4-incher.

You just might come across a decent "bargain" in those other barrels long before you find a 3.5-incher.

Good hunting.

P.S.: Hang onto that .38-44 if you can as finances permit. Those aren't growing on trees either.

I have a S&W Model 27 that I will be selling soon to fund a mission trip. The barrel is a tad longer than 3.5" I think. If interested, I can send info to you before I put it up for sale.

I actually prefer the 5"...but I do have this one...

And this one (pre-27)...

I would be envious,,,

I would be envious,,,
If my hands fit an N-frame.

I agree with you about the beauty of that revolver,,,
And I hope you find the 3.5" Barrel you want.

But for people like me I would prefer a Model 19/66,,,
Same beauty on a slightly smaller frame.

Isn't diversity a great thing? :)

Well, SaxonPig, I've seen those photos before and I drool every time. Beautiful revolvers.

aarondhgraham, I have a 4" model 19 and wouldn't mind a 2 1/2" version, but those 27s sure do get my motor running.

The short K frames are cool but they lack the panache and durability of the N frames.

I still like the shiny guns...

Joe, get one as soon as you can. Prices have skyrocketed in the last 2 -3 years. I did not jump on a really nice one 5 years ago, and ended up paying exactly twice as much for the one I purchased a year ago. I did though have a serious offer of $400.00 more than I paid for it, the day I picked it up at my LGS.

I am a big fan of the N frames. The hunt for specific ones never ends. The two I never stop looking for but will likely never have are a model 28 with an 8 & 3/8" barrel and one of the ultra rare nickel plated ones with a 4" or 5" barrel.

I have both a 3 1/2 27-2 and 3 inch 24 Lew Horten .44 Spl.

Nope, they sleep in the safe. Part of my retirement package.

What might be a fair price for one in good condition? Smith & Wessons on Gunbroker seem to be bringing big money these days. Are those prices a reflection of what they bring in local gun shops? I don't see that many at the local shops where I live.

Saw a blued pre 27 at a local show last month wearing diamond target stocks (worth at least $200 by themselves) tagged at $800. No idea if seller would negotiate. I heard it sold but didn't hear the price. The 3.5" N frame 357 has been a hot item for some time. Super clean examples will bring $1,200-$1,500. Glad I have all I need because I couldn't afford to buy them now.

The 3.5" version is the one all the boys want. The shorter the barrel the higher the prices. Generally speaking older models will command more money. The 27-1 is rare due to only one year of production so prices are way high when they turn up. The -2 model will usually be the least expensive.

It varies but $800 ish seams to be about the starting point for most N frames lately. That is actually a price reduction for some, at least around hear.

The 4" Model 28 is easier to find at a reasonable price and will be a fantastic option as a shooting gun. I admit, however, that it doesn't look quite as mean and cool as the 3.5" M27.
