I shot the S&W 500 Magnum yesterday

Went shooting with a friend who just acquired a new toy. It was the 8" bbl version. I expected worse, but the recoil was straight back into the hand. Sure wouldn't shoot a whole box in 1 session though. Not in any hurry to buy my own specimen either, but fun to put a few rounds through just to be able to say you did.

On the other end of the spectrum, we tested a NAA .22LR/.22 Mag mini revolver as well. POS shot 18" low at 10 feet. The danger with that gun is that you might be tempted to feel armed while carrying it.

The NAA revolvers (autos too) are nosehair burners. If you can see their nosehairs, you COULD hit them. OTT, I agree, they are a joke. My experience with the S&W 500 was the same as yours. It felt like I had caught a fast pitch baseball. I felt the recoil in my palms and shoulders. It wasn't unpleasantly painful. It reminded me more of a pistol grip 12 bore with slugs. I didn't lose any crowns or fillings. My left hip felt more pain. Expensive to feed.

I killed a squirrel with my NAA 22lr at about 15 feet.

#1 rule about a gunfight......Bring a gun. The NAA loaded with 5 hyper-vel 22's is a nasty combo. I have used mine to finish off several deer that have been hit by a car. It is avery effective little gun. It is suprisingly accurate when you get use to shooting it. What other gun is smaller than a pocket knife?

Re: 500

I have a friend too that has one. It's ok to shoot, but real expensive, I think he said a box of 20 is like $35.00. Recoil isn't as bad as one would think or expect though, kind of a mind over matter thing.

I just sighted in my 460xvr with 200gr hornady's. The recoil on this gun is nothing, the 10and5/8 pc model. I shot a box of shells (20) and if they didn't cost so much would shot more. I whacked a bowling pin at 100yds and split it in two. Smith did a wonderfull job on felt recoil with this gun, but you still know you touched off a 460, man what a ball of flame:D

re 500 mag

hi
The NAA mini is a nostril gun. LAST RESORT. I have had my NAA .22mag, .22LR combo for 10 years and it is far from a POS.

I've shot a couple examples too. The 10" hunter isn't bad at all. the 4" 'snubby' I only put 5 shots through. I didn't find it pleasant at all.

I would like to shoot both the 460 Mag and a .480 Ruger sometime though.

I had the 500 S&W, and had the same recoil issue. It is straight back into the palm of your hand. I dumped it for the Magnum Research BFR. Shootin the same CORBON loads, the recoil was noticably different -- and less. It is much more enjoyable to shoot.

There's a part of me, WAY deep down, that wants to get the 4" .500. Partially for "da collection", and partially for those "big, brawny men" at the local pistol matches that want to give me greif when I shoot a 9...
