I shot my new 38 special!

I shot my new S&W 642 38 special +p with the crimson lazer grips! It was awesome. I have never shot a double action revolver (well maybe once when little) but long story short after only 50 practice rounds I qualified it to add to my ccw! It fits in my pocket perfect even in semi tight fitting jeans. I am very satisfied. I also got some nice speer gold dot 38 special +p 125 grain for defense carry. Thanks to everyone and all the great advice that helped me decide on S&W over Taurus. I am loving it!

See ya at the range!

Me too

Steeltoe - I second your choice.

I have the same M642 / Laser package and love it. The Crimson Trace Laser is perfect for me. With eyes that are not what they used to be, I can be on target much more quickly than with all types of iron sights.

It's my always gun, even under the pillow at night.

I use the Speer 135 gr +P load developed for snubbies.

I am sighted in at seven yards and can see the dot in daylight at that range.

nice

Yeah I love it. I think I am a S&W guy now for revolvers. Still contemplating wether or not I want a small frame auto to add to my ccw also. I have always been leary of the glock and any internal hammer autos but hearing good things as they are DAO just like my revolver. Hmmm But for now yeah I go in tomorrow now that i qualified and will have the 38 on my ccw by lunch time!

Glad yours is working for you too!

cool!

Steel Toe and Slip Shooter,

So glad you like what you got!

I have the same package, except my 642 is an older one and not the +P. I still carry +P ammo in it, though, and the testing done on them shows no perceptible damage to them after thousands of rounds of +P.

Word of warning, though: I had trouble firing 10 rounds consecutively with it because the trigger pull was so fierce. I put a Wilson spring kit in it, and now the cylinder turns unevenly, and my accuracy went to heck. *sigh* Back to the drawing board……..

Can't Beat The Law of Reciprocity!

I use + Ps in my 642 and have pretty much settled on Winchester's 130 gr. JHP (mostly because that's the load that grouped closest to the point of aim at 25 yds. in my gun. I like this revolver a lot , especially for its intended purpose (concealed carry when the weather is too warm or the social occasion too "formal" for toting my favorite CCW: a S&W 6906). However, as much as I like the 642, I have to say that, when firing +Ps, it is decidedly the most unpleasant handgun I've ever shot; way more uncomfortable and harder to control than even my Taurus snubbie in .41 Magnum. The price you pay for using hot loads in small/light pistols. And controllability is not helped when the little revolver is shod with the smallish, boot-style grips-which, of course, are needed for optimum concealability.

No getting around the fact that trade-offs and compromises are always in play when choosing a handgun with adequate "stopping" power that is small and light enough to carry comfortably.

hmmm

This is my first revolver and I admit I was worried about how hard the kick might be. I have not noticed anything too bad at all. I can squeez off all five rounds without stopping in decent accuracy at about 20 feet. Mine came with the crimson lazer grips and even with lazer turned off the grips are nice. I then purchased some speer gold dot 125 grain jacketed hollow points +p and didnt notice any more kick at all. Hmmm hope they really are +p! hehe I like speer also because in CA this is what Police use so if you ever do have to defend yourself it looks really good to the jury that you use the same as the police.

My 642/ct package had a 13.5 pound DA trigger pull when I got it new. I installed the Wolf spring kit for S&W J frame revolvers and polished rough spots and cleaned the insides. I lubed the internals with Tetra Gun Grease and re-assembled.

I now have a consistent 9 to 9.25 pound trigger pull that is smooth and consistent.

Some will advise against changing out the coil main spring for fear of soft hammer blows. That just hasn't occurred with my 642. I put between 150 and 200 rounds through it since the Wolf upgrade with no failures or misfires.

Good luck on yours.

yes, hmmmm...........

Well, Steel Toe, you must be one tough cookie. Like dgludwig said, “it is decidedly the most unpleasant handgun I've ever shot”. That has been my experience, also, even using “cowboy loads”, and even compared to a lightweight Taurus snubbie .45 Long Colt which is far easier to control. I have had my little 642 for about 10 years now, and finally put Laser Grips on it when they the LGs were still made out of the hard plastic. Oh, my – what a rude little gun. Before I fired 10 rounds, I would be bleeding.

In 2003, I put the Wilson spring kit in the 642, then put the new soft Laser Grips on in 2004. But even with the new grips, every time I practice with it, I break the nail on my trigger finger (and I do not have long fingernails). I have not yet figured out how that is happening……..

Slip Shooter, like you, I have had no problem with “soft hammer blows” with the Wilson kit. But I have to wonder why your trigger pull is “smooth and consistent”, while mine is definitely not. I did have a gunsmith (who is now my Sweetie) install the Wilson springs, and he also did some internal tuning (polishing). I’m not sure what he used (grease) internally, but I know it was not Tetra – I can smell that stuff at 50 yards. :barf:

I guess it could just be a difference in basic hand and finger strength. I suppose I could get a couple of the guys to do a little shooting with it, see how their accuracy is. If they don’t have much trouble getting good groups, we will know it is me and not the gun. I may have to go back to carrying a .380 until I get this figured out……. :(

If Crimson Trace made soft, padded laser grips for the snubbie Taurus .45 LC, I would consider switching. More weight to carry, though…….

SteelToe,

Congrats on the new gun!!

Those 642's are a crackerjack design.
