I shot a Ruger MK II Target tonight.......

Well I have finished 200 rds so far. This is my first time pistol shooting, so I have been shooting resting at a table at 50 feet at the Type B-33 Targets. My first 100 rounds were through a Smith & Wesson 41. The trigger was smooth and the grip was fairly comfortable. Tonight I shot 100 rds with a Ruger MK II Target Model. Its feel was different (not good/bad, just different). I couldn't reach the slide release with my normal grip and the whole magazine release I didn't really like. The mags were kind of tricky to get in and loading them was harder than the 41. My thumb still hurts from holding down the guide button. I didn't shoot too bad with it though (relative to my first 100 rds). I don't know if it was better or worse just because I don't have enough rounds through either gun to see what my tendencies and consistancies are. Next time I am going to try one of the club's Browning Buckmarks. The one gun I do want to try, my club doesn't have (Ruger 22/45). The mag release is at the top of the grip on that gun and of course it has a 1911 style grip. I plan on getting a 1911 some day, so this transition is important. Well I guess I don't really have a question here, just reporting in. Thanks for all of your advice so far. I can shoot the club's guns all I want, but they might not be shooting this summer (university club), so I would definitely want to have something of my own by then. The 41's are too expensive so right now it looks like it is between the Ruger 22/45 and a Browning buckmark. I may consider the standart MKII just because I like proven guns that have been around for a long time.

Do you have any comments on the difference between the standard buckmark and the camper?

For the MKII?
How much accuracy is lost from a 5 1/2" barrel to a 4" barrel?
How much affect does the bull barrel have on accuracy?

Thanks.

A few searches here will tell you more than you want to know about Ruger and Browning 22s. All I can add is that it's not really fair to compare either to a Smith model 41. I also wouldn't compare either one to a Hammerli or Pardini. You get the idea.

I have a Ruger MkII Competition with Fung grips and it's at least as fun as any other pistol I have.

Smith 41

I know, the 41 is sweet, but I can get 2 rugers for the price of one 41. I am on the college budget, so $250 for a nice .22 doesn't sound too bad. Thanks for the info.

There is a little aluminum tool that fits down over the Ruger magazine and has a big thumb tab on it. It makes loading the Ruger magazines much easier. I don't have a source for it, but I have seen them at gun shows and some dealers have them. Cost is around a buck, or less than the cost of Band-Aids for your thumb.

Agree w/ the suggestion to do a search and see what the board thinks re: Ruger & the Browning.
Short story long, I have had a Ruger for a long time & have thoroughly enjoyed it! ;)

I second the recommendation for the mag loading tool! I don't think I'd want to load a bunch of MK-II mags without my little plastic gadget. As mentioned, they're only a buck or two, and you could really make one from a block of plastic, it's just a rectangular hole in a larger retangular piece of plastic about 1/4" thick. Simple gadget, works very well in saving the thumb! :)

boiler 03,

I have a Ruger MkII target model with an ultradot mounted on it and love it. Unfortunately a gentleman at my range let me try his russian Baikal IZH35M and got me hooked on it. It is a much better shooter than the Ruger/Brownings. Trigger can be adjusted exactly to your liking by 5 built in adjustments. The grip is a target grip that is darn close out of the box but can be dremeled/sanded on to fit your hand exactly. Barrel is low so muzzle flip is non-existent. Supposedly it was used in the Olympics several years ago (can't confirm). First time shots left one ragged hole at 10 yds. They can be purchased new at CDNN Investments in Texas for $379 plus shipping. My Ruger now stays in the safe. A buddy who shoots NRA (newbie) just picked one up and gained 100 points going from his Ruger MKII Target to the Baikal. If you're just looking to shoot at paper/silhouettes I'd suggest the Baikal, if you're looking for a field gun then the Ruger is the way to go. Do a search through yahoo/google/etc. for more info.
