I saw the coolest thing at the range

Well on second thought maybe the dumbest .

The guy in the next lane was shooting a semi and a revolver . At first glance the revolver looked to be a 22lr . I went on shooting minding my own busyness when one of his cases droped to the floor in the same area I happen to be looking . Hmm a bottle necked rim fire , holy cow that's a 17HMR in a revolver  At the time I thought how cool is that , but now that I've been thinking about it . Why would you want that round in any type of hand gun . I don't see it , The whole idea is velocity in a rim fire and I have to assume when fired from a 4" barrel you take all that advantage away .

How about you ? Is there a good or practical use for a 17HMR revolver that a 22lr or magnum does not do ?

It may not have the velocity it has in a rifle, but neither does the .22LR, and you don't have the practical accuracy of a rifle anyway. I'm betting it still zips right along, though.

The bigger issue is that bottleneck cartridges and revolvers don't play well together; the necks expand, the empty cases have trouble reseating, and the action gets very rough, or gets tied up all together.

Why would you want most of the stuff people buy?
Just 'cause?
Seems to be reason enough for most things, including shootin' irons.

I agree and then ???

To each, his own and not my cup of tea ...... ;)

I am eye balling a new BFR in 308. Kinda cool.

Already have the 45-70. It is way cool and I have already dropped three Bison with it.

Personally, I wouldn't want one but everybody has their own likes and dislikes. I have a farm and I could see one for dispatching critters that cause problems - woodchucks, possums, coons, etc. But then one of my 38s will do the same thing.

As far as bottleneck cartridges in revolvers - the 32-20, which started out as a rifle cartridge, was adapted to revolvers and it worked out fine - and it is a bottleneck. Yes, it's larger and a centerfire, but it's still a bottleneck and a lot of folks still shoot it today and reload it.

In a SA, the 17 shouldn't be any harder to eject than a 22 if it has a good ejector rod set-up.

I shot a 12 or 14 in smith and wesson 17 and it was very impressive. like a 1300$ gun too. Could have gotten similar performance from a 200$ rifle.

taurus has some pretty cool 17 hmr revolvers..smith has a performance center one that comes with a scope and a bipod stand..pricey though..

.17 calibers hold little interest for me, especially when it comes to handguns-but, then again, I have been accused of being a little close-minded when it comes to things gun-related. :o

My thoughts on why it's a bad hand gun caliber has to do with how much I've been shooting 50yds with my hand guns lately . More then I should seeing how hard it is to do so . If your shooting inside of 50yds with a hand gun . I'd take a 22lr over any 17 cal . Now shooting 100 yards with a rifle , I think I'd take the 17hmr . I just can't see it being a good hand gun round .

Heritage makes one

I owned a Heritage in 17HMR. It was fun too shoot and reasonably accurate. I sold it off cause of the cost of the ammo. Prices being what they are now the 17HMR on the shelfs now seems a reasonable price.

If I remember right, it's still doing 1700 fps even at revolver lengths :D. They're good for the same reason rifle guys get excited about new rounds, wildcat loads, and powder and bullet talk... it's more intellectual than practical or necessary.

Not really a rational thing but I like having a revolver in the same caliber as a rifle so I picked up a stainless Single Six 17 with a 6.5 inch barrel. It's very accurate but very loud; I have another 6.5 SSix in 22lr/mag that doesn't make nearly as much noise.

Really it's just a fun thing to have but I certainly don't regret getting it :)
