hard chromed revolvers.

will it affect function at all?

also, can you get matte hard chrome or is it always polished?
if you can get matte, will it polish over time from holster wear?

last, is chrome a good protector for rust?

Brushed Chrome

Not sure how to answer your guestion about the use factor but the chrome makes the action AMAZING ! Best....dewey

I don't have experience with chrome firearms but I do have a lot of experience with chrome in automotive applications.

1. Chrome does not conduct heat very well. there for it makes things stay hot longer.

2. Chrome tends to peal or come off.

3. Look at some old chrome rims they do rust.

Once again I have no history with chrome firearms these may or may not be factors in firearm use.

from what ive read/seen, firearms chrome is worlds apart from automitive chrome.

automotive chrome chips because of a layer of copper that is underneath. (i think it makes it less expensive??)

anyhow i know chrome, when applied properly, is an EXTREMELY durable finish,

i just dont know if you can do it to revolvers and i have NO idea how they would look hard chromed

Well, here's one revolver that was chromed sometime in the past. It was a pretty good job and it seems to have lasted for a while.

I can say that the action is near perfect. But then I have a blued Colt Double Action that is even older and it's action is near perfect too.

visit some of the 1911 specific boards....lots of hard chroming going on there. Seems the finish is all up to the metal prep work...polish the metal, shiny finish. Bead blast the metal, matte finish. Sand with fine grit without polishing, brushed look.

Of course, I could be wrong...I haven't had any caffiene yet today.

I had a rusted, slightly pitted S&W M24 hard chromed by an outfit in Arkansas, that did Wilson's plating years ago. While I was satisfied with the job, it changed the interior diminsions just enough that I had to return the gun to the factory to be re-timed. Other than that extra expense, it was fine. Then, I saw a 25-5 that a friend had sent to Metalife, and the difference was amazing. All my Smiths are stainless, now, but if I ever need another plating job, it will go to Mahovsky -

If you want the chrome look without the hassle, get a polished stainless Rossi or Taurus. My 972 is quite the looker!
P.S.IMHO chromed guns look cheesy.
