cigars cigars! It's a girl! I just brought my baby "Betty" from the hospital/gunstore. She's beautiful (choking back the tears) I've always wanted one, and now that I finally have one, I don't know what to say...

She's a dark brown color, weighs about 10.8 lbs, and is about 48 inches long.

She's an M1A National Match with a wooden stock, and heavy barrel, match sights, and match trigger.

I now know how it feels to be a father, lighter in the wallet now, but happy.

Albert.

Pic's coming...

I'm trying to figure out how to disassemble her so I can clean her before her picture is taken..

I can't pull out the trigger assembly.. it's stuck...

The manual is HORRIBLE. Anybody have a website reference of how to disassemble her, and clean her?

The action and trigger guard of the NM model are glass bedded to the stock so it may take some coaxing to get it apart. Just don't take it apart too often as you'll wear the bedding out. I've had my M1A for 8 or 9 years now and have yet to seperate the action from the stock, but then I don't shoot it that often.

Congrats on the new addition, seems there has been quite a rally with the M14/M1A area lately. I read on 3 differnet boards and it seems that agout 20 plus guys have recently picked one up including myself.
I read a post somewhere about a guy that has had a NM for years and it has NEVER been removed from the stock on the advise of his gunsmith. I only have a Standard but I can see where just about everything is accessable with the rifle in the stock.
Oh, get you some tetra grease the it...I was told that it is about the best for the M1A.

Happy shooting

Karsten

don't disamble it unless you have to. The trigger group is part of the bedding. Each disamble will get additional worn-out.

Ain't NO reason.............

Do NOT take it apart period, unless it breaks............

Or if you use it in VERY bad conditions..........sand, grit, etc.

Also, use NO oil, anywhere on this riffle.......GREASE only, and not much.

If your gonna use it in sandy, very dirty areas, REMOVE all grease, and lube, BEFORE shooting...........

Many more tricks and tips to cleaning, when and how...........

Ge the proper items BEFORE attempting............

Twoblink, as the otehrs have said, there's no reason to take it apart...you can clean almost every peice with the action still in the stock! Open the bolt, put in a charger clip (or mag if you have a scope mount on) and clean CAREFULLY from the muzzle end, using a muzzle guide for the (ONE PIECE!) cleaning rod. The clip or mag will prevent the bolt from slamming shut if your cleaning rod touches it. Dinengage the op rod from the bolt and ease it forward. Then the bolt can be removed for cleaning and inspection. The trigger mechanism may be removed without disturbing the bedding too much, but it shouldn't be needed. Keep that rifle in the stock.

Congratulations, but hold off on the cigars. Kentucky Rifle builder Hershel House commented on cigars, "Now I know where all the s--t goes."

Well, I did take out the trigger assembly. There was some serious amount of packing grease on it, it was all sticky etc.. So I gave it a good cleaning.

I tried regular lub (CLP) but it didn't seem like it was doing much for it, and so I cleaned it, and am using grease (pure lithium). Everything is nice and slick. I'm probably not going to take the trigger assembly apart from this point on for a long time.

I am probably not going to clean from the muzzle, I don't trust that! I'll probably get a bore snake and still clean from the back side....

I was so tempted to go today and give her a try... But I'm resisting the temptation...

Question::

I was thinking about parkerizing it, I like the Metacol III from Arizona Systems, I like that gray green brownish look. What do you guys think? Does something like that is good?

Any place I can read more about coating applications?

Albert

Congragulations on your beautiful new baby girl. Feed her a steady diet of quality brass and clean her well (Rocking to sleep, optional).

Ahh who needs Manuals !!!!!!!!!! Most Manuals deserve to be targets at 50yds. I almost took my Mark II pistol to the range and shot it after trying to take it apart and put it back together. I decided I should read the Directions

New guns are always tight you got to break them in !

Well done Two Blink.

I am still up in the hills for a while. I will get in tough with you when I get back and we will take our girls out! Congratulations.
