I need your opinions

I bought a SP101 last year and had to send it in to Ruger, because the barrel was not fully turned. They fixed it and I also got a free set of Crimson Trace grips for the gun.

Well, I have a friend that has offered a mint Marlin 30AS w/ scope (Tasco) for the Crimson Trace grips. I like the CTs because of the laser, but prefer the feel of the OEM grips better. Plus the OEMs fit more holster options, I have realized. I do not know what to do, and need your advice.

Would you make this trade?
Is a laser really needed on a snubnose weapon? It is my main CCW.

The SP101 is my main CCW, but I train at work and on my own with point and shoot and feel comfortable with the gun in self defense situations.

I do not like those laser sights anyway. I would trade them if you like the scope being offered. You certainly do not need a laser on a CCW weapon.

Take the marlin. If one day you have to use your gun it will happen very fast, in that moment, are you sure you will be fast and cool enough to react, draw, and look for this little red point before it's too late? Personaly I would not loose time in this kind of situation with a laser. Laser is great for ofensive situation, in defensive situation it's draw, identify, front sight and press. My 2 $

Take the marlin. You don't need a laser to be effective with the SP101, plus the OEM grips feel better to you - that in and of itself is enough reason to get rid of the CTs, IMO...

Crimson Trace grips cost $200 don't they?

These are quality laser sights that can only help you in shooting any handgun.

Retuned Ruger plus Crimson Trace grips equals a great handgun combination.

And yes,Ruger no doubt checked that gun from top to bottom before they let it get back to you.

Tasco scopes are bargain scopes.

Good scopes,I have two on my rimfires that work great but bargain scopes.

I would not make that trade.

Check the look on your 'friends' face when you say 'no thanks'.

if I understand corectly, his friend proposed him to trade a marlin + a tasco for the CT grips. Wich is a pretty cool deal.

I say take the trade. You dont need CT's, just front sight focus:D

As cool as ct's are and yes i own lasers on some of my guns, your getting an enitre setup for the grips. And if the OEM grips feel better that should be your selling point as grip is one of the 7 fundamentals of shooting.

I have to agree... do the trade.

I've never used these type of grips and would love to have a set just to see...but have better things to waste, excuse me...invest, my gun money on...

My first rule is never rely on electronics in a gun for self defense.... just not a good idea... batteries go bad.... circuits break....

Yes,my geezerness has crept up and bit me on the arse.

If it is just for the grips, then as others have said,do the trade.

If it is for the grips and the gun ,I still say don't.

As for putting a laser on a small ccw I would say defintly a good idea, I bought a crimson trace for my little .380 I carry when I cant practicly conceal my main carry piece and was AMAZED with how much It helped when practicing for quickly firing, I used to think that my poor accuracy with my .80 was due to the short barrel and it size (of course not my skill!;)) but now I realize a TON of it was the short sight picture. Just my opinion, hope it helps

I have found that the laser grips make a great difference in shooting 25 yards + with a snub nose. You may never have to engage at 25 yards and you may never have to engage at all. I train for all situations and have CT grips on all my carry guns
