njredneck, welcome to the playpen! Unlimited numbers can play...

However: Life will be better (said the grammar Nazi) if you'd break your commentary into real-world sentences and paragraphs. This is not a place for text-messaging, okay? :)

hello and welcome njredneck. southern nj here. unless mother nature is trying to be funny male deer have antlers and outies. female deer have innies and no antlers. i supposed there is a chance of a female buck with antlers and an outie :barf:.

ok thanks for the help i guess? talking about not giving hunters a bad name, u guys jumped all over me just about my typeing

Sorry that you feel that way but the text messaging style of 'typing' is annoying to many of those who don't use the format. Which is the majority of the people here.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Kapische?

My advice is this:

1)Find a local gun/hunting club and join. They will have plenty of knowledgeable people many of whom should be willing to help.

2)The suggestion to correct your typing and grammar is meant to help you. It will only lend to the level of respect you receive in places such as The Firing Line. Fair or not, it's the truth. It's not meant to insult or belittle you.

That, plus it's number 4 of the forum rules you should have read when you joined. ;)

4) Mangling of the English language whether thru ignorance, age, sloth or intent diminishes and embarrasses each of us. Posts which are indecipherable due to inability to translate thoughts into coherent written statements will be deleted without explanation. Recidivists will be removed.

I read this post several days ago, before anyone had replied.
I was wondering what this gibberish was.
So, this is the text messaging that the youngsters engage in, huh?

King's English, lad!

"You have no duty to understand me. It is my duty to make myself understood."

But it's a two-way street:

"I have no duty to understand you. It is your duty to make yourself understood."

Writing in an adult manner is part of making oneself understood.

Specifically, I think people would just rather see full words, like "you" instead of "u", and ends to sentences with punctuation. Nobody worth their salt here is that pretentious to get down on you for imperfect composition, but taking the time to at least convey your thoughts clearly serves two purposes. First, it's courteous to the people here, who want to spend their time helping you with suggestions and discussion, but do not want to spend time trying to figure out what the question was to begin with. Second, it prevents PETA and the Brady Campaign from labelling us a bunch of uneducated hicks who can't be trusted to be responsible. Hopefully that can tie up the tangent here.

Redirecting this toward the original post...

I shot a doe with a pecker once as well. Last minutes of shooting light and I needed a freezer filler. Thankfully the buttons were small enough to count as antlerless under Wisconsin regs. I still had a buck tag too, but I wanted to hold out. It is embarassing though.

I was 21 when I got into hunting. I've been successful to my own satisfaction. It just takes time. Hang in there. You'll make mistakes, just be sure you learn from them. Locating your quarry is indeed most of the problem. It sounds like you have the right idea seeking food sources, but there's more than that, and your own presence might be a part of the equation as well. Read up on message boards like here, hunting rags, even "real" books. Then grab some topos, when you know what you're looking for, and optimize your woods time by knowing where you're checking before you get there. And make sure you don't just hit the funnels - find the nasty areas full of swamps and brambles. Come deer season, the deer will head for these sanctuaries as public land gets busy with hunters.

Shotgun is a good idea. I definitely think archery would be harder for a learning hunter. It will extend your range and create new options for you. Just make sure you practice and know your limits. If you get a slug barrel with irons, or especially a scope if you've got the money, it will put you in good shape beyond 100 yards.

Best of luck, keep us posted, and feel free to ask more specific questions as they come up.

well i guess i should start out apologizing to every one on the forum i didn't read the rules but i will do it as soon as im done with this post. it was the way i interpreted everyone's post , i was just looking for help and what i saw was a bunch of people ragging on me, when i should have realized you guys were trying to help with me typing. but thank you for your help sorry if a few slip out but im learning to type kind of the real way.

Since you haven't seen one since, maybe "all those deer" you'd been seeing were really just one hyperactive button buck.

njredneck,
It takes a big man to apologize. For that, apology accepted on my part. I hope that you stick around the forums for a long time. There is a lot of experience here, and good people. I hope that you just jump in and have fun with the rest of us. From your last post, it looks like an intelligent young man is at the keyboard. Best, and good luck. - Ted
