I get bored shooting at paper circles all the time,,,
And when I take newbies to the range I would like the experience to be more fun.

Do any of you have any games that can be shot for fun competition.

I do things like balloons, plastic bottles/jugs filled with colored water, & metal/hard rubber spinner targets.

I'm asking for more ideas for fun interactive targets,,,
Any ideas you can share with me?

The shooting distances will be anywhere from 10 yards out to 25 yards.

Watch Impossible Shots on the Outdoor Channel on Wednesday, lots of suggestions.

I've been cutting cards with my Marlin 94 38/357. I've been getting one out of three at 15 yards.

One of my favorite training tools for CC w/laser sights. Get a mechanic's Inspection mirror ( or if you're not worried about your image, wifes compact). Practice shooting without exposing yourself. Use the mirror to view the target. Point the gun at the target, when you see the red dot, fire.

Take a cheap piece of plywood, cut out a window. Set it out on the range, put two different colored balloons in the window. Tie the balloons loose so they move around in the wind. Now shoot the bad balloon without hitting the hostage Balloons.

My wife got a Judge for snakes when she's horseback. I borrowed it and use a trip clay pigeon thrower. Trip the thrower draw and try to hit the pigeon before it hits the ground (not real easy but fun).

There are a million shooting games out there, limited only by your imagination.

You need to check to see what your range allows, I have the advantage of having my own 400 yard range.

Hello kraigwy,,,

I have the advantage of having my own 400 yard range.

Have I mentioned how much I hat,,, eerrr,,, envy you for that?

I like that hostage/captor thing,,,
I've even got an old window frame out back.

Thanks my friend. :)

One of my favorites is setting out cans of soda at 15 - 20 yards and popping them. It is more fun with a limited number of rounds. I usually get six and shake them up real well. Then set them out and the other person only gets six shots.

To make it more challenging put a time limit on it. 6 cans in 10 seconds with a SAA clone can be a challenge. I use a Heritage Rough Rider with the 22mag cylinder. It isn't as challenging as a bigger caliber but it keeps it fun for everyone. Plus it still makes a nice geyeser when it punctures the can. Plus if you shoot Dynapoints it is cheaper than 9mm.

ETA:
Maybe I should say plus less and gather my thoughts before posting.:p

Hello MikeNice81,,,

Nice idea,,,
There's a Dollar Store near me thats sells some undrinkable brand of soda pop for $2.50 a case.

I'll think I'll give that a try some day soon,,,
I wonder if the residue will attract bees though. ;)

i like to set up multiple cans spread out on a hill. i number the cans and have my friend call out the can number. i have to shoot the one he calls out as fast as i can, point-and-shoot style. it's a lot of fun.

Attach clay birds to sticks, about 4 ft long.
Plant lots of them in the ground, scattered at challenging distances, and see how fast you can hit them.

Set up a barricade, 2 ft wide and 6' tall.
(A target on a stand will do).
Set up a double target, to simulate a baddie, overlapped with and hiding behind a hostage.
From behind the barricade, lean out and get the baddie as fast as possible.
Without hitting the hostage, of course.
Balloons can be used for the target heads.

I haven't tried it in the summer yet. I just started doing it back in December. So, I don't know about bees. Using a diet soda with artificial sweetner might help.

My dad said they use to sit a tennis ball out at ten yards and shoot it. The first person got six shots to move the ball as far as they could. The next person would take six shots at another tennis ball. Which ever person moved the ball farthest won.

I don't think it would move much after the first hit. I guess it would take some practice to move it without destroying it right away.

50' or 25 yards. Staple a whole deck of playing cards face down onto a sheet of cardboard and set it up on the target stand. everybody pays a dollar then takes 5 shots or 7 shots depending on the skill level of your shooters and the best hand wins. One shooter shoots his string of 5 or 7 shots then goes up and pulls off the cards they shot and the next person is up. Best hand wins the pot. I used to do this for club shoots and half the money went to the club. The winning hand was more important than the few bucks they might have won and the better shooters usually just let their winnings go to the club.

I made a shooting tree, a 2x4 on a stand like a Christmas tree stand. I put little shelves on the 2x4 from about 1' from the bottom all the way to the top. Little 1x1x3" blocks of wood set on the little shelves, you start from the bottom and work your way up. If you hit the 2x4 or one of the shelves your score is zero and you pay the club a $1 penalty. Best time to clear all the blocks wins, shots unlimited, you can reload as often as you have to. I started out at 25 yards but after repeated complaints by large people with loaded guns I slowly moved it closer and closer till it was within 7 yards. I refused to bring it any closer and the club got a lot of dollar bills from penalty shots. :D

Me too, thank God for feral cats.....

I use them clays on sticks too, first time I used a metal fence post, not so good. I also shoot at my place, I can put a target 1/2 mile away :) if ya wanta try it. we usually shoot trap, targets, any dead animals might be laying around, an old car body I recently took in for scrap. 55 gallon drums when we need a new burning barrell. Lately the little flowers on teh crab apple tree....

For those of us who can't do these things because our ranges only allow paper, there are some fun paper targets available at targetz.com. I use them all the time.

They have games, bin Laden, multi-piece, etc.

I do shoot clays a lot,,,

But I just lay them on the dirt of the berm,,,
The nice thing about that is you can see where you missed.

I like the playing card game idea and cards are cheap.

targetz.com was a great lead.

Thanks gentlemen,,,
great ideas abound.

Dueling tree

Buy yourself a dueling tree (hope your range lets you set it up)

With 2 paddles on each side - the object is to shoot and hit the paddles which will then swing over to your opponents side.
Back and forth they go untill one shooter has Zero paddles on his side
(even if just for a fraction of a second)

Better reload fasr too!!!

They are GREAT.

Me and one shooting buddy take turns with my 6inch 617 .22LR revolver poping the tops of of dandelions. My is a no dash 6 shot, so we get scores 0-6. No one has yet to get a 6, but I have a few 4's under my belt.;)

I like to put eye hooks in the top of bowling pins and hang them from a 10'
2x4, you never have to reset your pins and after the first hit its a moving target.

Beer is good

I buy a case of the cheap beer and get it good and shook up. Range clean up is not fun but the visual explosion outweighs the task.

Like the sporting clays hanging off of a surveyor stick.

Hang Frying pans off of a tree - (Hit a few yard sales with the wife and you'll find plenty) They don't last long but each pan size makes a unigue sound and if your using various calibers it makes a good visual comparison.

Im like you, always looking for ways to make the family's shooting a bit more exciting.
