Hey yall. I just received my shims from Leupold and will probably put them on my rifle this weekend. I was wanting to know exactly how to lap the rings once I shim the dual dove tail base. I will need to get my lapping materials from the local hardware store. Would you please give me some specific instructions on how to lap.

My understanding is that I need to get a 30mm (my scope tube diameter) pipe and some valve grinding paste. Do I put the paste on the outside of the pipe and then gently push it back and forth until the high spots on the rings are gone? Aluminum or steel pipe? How messy is the paste? Or do I use a type of cloth abrasive? I need the specifics. As of right now I am an idiot and don't know what I am doing. Please teach me with the knowledge that I am an idiot and need detailed instructions. Thank you for your time ladies and gentleman. I would be lost without you :).

Here's how we lap scope rings in the gun shop where i work.

First it's much easier to have the rifle held still by a padded vise.

Second, we apply the lapping compound (paste) to each ring.

third using a steel bar of the correct diameter(30mm in your case). Work the bar through the rings with long strokes in the same plane as the barrel. turning the bar at the same time.

You don't want to go too fast, do a little at a time then clean off the rings and lay your scope in them. If you can see daylight throught he scope tube and rings, your not done.

The paste is messy but cleans up good with some paper towels and light solvent.

It's worth it to just order the bar and stuff from an outfit like Brownell's... Russ Haydon's, Bruno's and Sinclair's also has 'em...

One trick I learned is to watch the finish dissapear on the inside of the bottom half of the rings as an indicator of how close the rings are getting to "true". For me, this is an easier test than looking for gaps around the tube. If the rings happen to be silver, I color them with a felt tip pen so I can see the progress.

Sinclair International has a great kit.
