I need some input from the bolt action crowd...

I am in the market for a new bolt action rifle in .308. I would like a heavy barrel and a synthetic stock. The first rifle I ever bought was a Savage 10FP 308. I sold it a few years ago while I was in college to help pay some bills. I have mourned that decision ever since!:( This time around im looking to spend a little more money (paid $500 out the door for the savage). I have had my eye on a few in particular. I am quite fond of the rem 700 tws on remingtons law enforcement website. I also like savage's fcpxp hs precision package. And the gun id like most is nighthawk precision tactical's offering in .308, however... I might find myself vomiting if I spent $3800 on a single gun (and thats not including a scope). I work for a living... $3800 is a looooot of work! I like the package offerings because they are already glassed and with leupolds none the less:D! Im open to other suggestions or input on the rifles I have named. Any input is greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time!

Dicks has heavy bull barrel Remington 700 308s I am not sure if they are considered SPSs or ADLs, but they don't have a floor plate on the bottom of the stock. I bought one a couple years ago when they were called the SPS Varmint and had the floor plate, but it is essentially the same gun as what they have now and mine has been a tack driver. I did change the stock and lighten the trigger pull. I got it on sell for $450.00 NIB I basically bought it for the barreled action because the stock that comes with it is pretty much a POS.

I shoot this...was my first modern bolt gun, and nevermind what the naysayers might mention, the Remington is accurate. I only recently changed to a Timney 1.5 pound trigger.

I like this one too. You can find this for a lot less than the MSRP

Neither of these will really break the bank, and will leave you more money for a good scope. Don't skimp on glass. Get the best you can afford.

I spent $400 for my 700. I spent all told, around $600 for my scope, rings, and mount.

Enjoy,

i would go with the savage for the fact that you get more quality for less money

and what are you going to do with your new toy

if just targets the HS precision is a heck of a gun.

but if hunting the maybe the 11 longrangehunter

Im eyeing up a Savage 10 FCP with the HS Precision stock.
For the price its a very good looking gun, the Tikka T3 Tactical is also a nice gun but the price goes up a bit.

That's easy. Get a Remington 700 SPS Varmint and bed the action, or put a Bells - Carlson or HS Precision stock on it.

If a 26" barrel isn't your style then go with the 20" Remington 700 Tactical. They are 'from the factory' pillar bedded and stocked with a Hogue overmolded stock.

You can't go wrong with either, and both are tac drivers from the box.

I think the very rifle you sold is right up your alley, it appears. You don't necessarily get better rifles just because the price tag is higher. I know you said new, but if you're set on a Remington 700 I would look at an older used model in good condition.

What in particular are you willing to spend for the full package? What's the primary purpose for the rifle? It's hard to give a definitive answer to your inquiry without knowing these items.

The new Savage 10 FCP-K with the muzzle brake really is an improvement over the 10 FP.
I would go get the newer Savage to replace your older model.

I have the same 10 FP with the accutrigger that you had.
I will shoot the barrel out of it I like it so much.

One shooting buddy liked mine so much he bought one too. We shoot them at least twice a month and they average just over 0.5 inches with their favorite ammos at 100 yards.

Another regular shooting buddy was impressed but slower to decide on a new rifle.
He finally broke down and bought a new 10 FCP-K with the accutrigger, accustock and muzzle brake.
After getting lots of abuse about the muzzle brake, he silenced all of our comments by results. We all have about the same power scopes on each of the rifles so that shouldn't be the difference.

The combination of the accustock and muzzle brake did show an improvement over the two older 10 FPs two of us were shooting.
It may be as much as 0.1 inches after he finishes finding his rifle's sweet spots.

And the muzzle brake keeps him on target for a follow up shot.
Its louder but it does work with a .308.

Im eyeing up a Savage 10 FCP with the HS Precision stock.

I picked one up the beginning of this year and have enjoyed it. Added a Karsten cheek piece to the HS stock and a Bushnell Elite 4200 FFP 6-24x50 mil-dot illuminated reticle & mil-dot turrets. Best 5 shot group to date was .40" @ 100 yds.

Cabelas also has an exclusive 10 FCP,it is the same rifle as the HS Precision stock, but it sports a Choate Tactical stock.
I bought mine a couple years ago, well I actually traded my Ruger #1 for it.
I also put another Choate Tactical stock on my 110 FLP 25/06.

sorry its taken me so long to reply...

As I stated I loved my Savage as well, and yes I know I made a mistake in selling it but its done sold and I wont be getting it back (shane). I will likely buy another Savage 10FP in the near future just because they are so cheap and such a great gun. However I would like a somewhat higher dollar rifle. And I know not every high priced gun is worth the money but I have found in more cases than not you usually get what you pay for. Id like to keep the price of the gun, mounts, and optics somewhere between 2k-3k. I do however love the 10FCP that was pictured in Tx's post. What did the Savage 10FCP set you back if you dont mind me asking? And how does it perform at the range? And to answer a previous question the gun would primarily be used as a range gun. It may go on the occasional hog hunt, and would be a great SHTF scoped option. I greatly appreciate all the input from everyone!

Not a .308, but it is a wildcat of the .308- thought about going with a .260?
Flatter shooting, if you handload (commercial ammo is scarce) it's worth considering. It'll do everything the .308 does, a little better...

Savage has the new 12 LRP in .260 for under a grand...it's on my wanna have bad list. From the reviews I've read, they're serious tack drivers as you'd expect.
