I need another rifle, like I need another hole in my head... butt...

I think I'm going to have to get one of these Savage model 25's in 5.7 X 28

anyone else interested... or have one yet ???

I have an FN pistol, as well as a custom Contender barrel... I think the Savage needs to find a way to come home with me this summer...

1 in 9 twist works well with my Contender handloads...

I've been wanting a Walking Varminter 25 myself in 22 Hornet. The savage folks said they should have been shipping these some time after April but they're still none available at our local distributor yet.

I was wanting a model 25 .223 with laminated stock and even just with a blued barrel and none of the gun shops around San Antonio can get one and neither Bass Pro Shops can. Therefore I have to settle with a Rem 700 .243 with wood and blued barrel from Bass Pro Im going to purchase saturday if they still have it

Very nice. I once had the Savage 12VLP in .223 but sold it. Good rifle, but not great. Now I am considering their MKII BTVS in .22LR, because, like you, I don't need another rifle. :D

I as far as I know this rifle isn't available yet. I was hot to get one until I found that the 5.7x28 has less powder capacity than a .22 Hornet. I might consider buying one in .221 Rem...

less powder, but higher pressure equal a more efficient cartridge... plus with the fast twist barrel, handloading up to 68 grain bullets ( like I do in my custom fast twist Ruger 77 Hornet ) is possible, with stronger more durable cases...

seems like a perfect 150 - 200 yard light varmint & pest combo for penny pinching handloaders...

plus the cartridge won't blow the shoulder forward like it does in the blowback FN guns, so it should be much easier to reload out of this rifle

I've got a custom 17 mach 2 that I regularly shoot to 200 yards just for the heck of it... might not have the punch to drop a crow at 200 & it gets interesting trying to read the wind... but fun none the less

I have a custom Ruger 77/22 in .22 K-Hornet. The brass is still thinner than other rounds but I get about 5x more reloads per case than on the regular Hornet. This gun is wickedly accurate and a joy to shoot. It's what I bought instead of the Savage model 25 I was thinking about getting.

I'm not ruling out getting another rifle in .221 Rem. I consider this round to be the modern replacement for the Hornet but it too hasn't caught on that well.

I have a 17 K Hornet Contender barrel that I finally got set up to shoot about 6 months before Remington standardized the 17 Fireball ( 17 K Hornet is a royal pain to reload ) ... wish I would have waited... also have a 17 Remington ( based on 223 cases ) but 4000 fps doesn't interest me as much as the more stabil heavier bullets...

probably but it was an older octogon TC custom barrel, I didn't have it made... it's properly marked & such... better to leave it alone & have some cartridges for it ( just fire forming the 17 is much more work than just sticking a factory 22 Hornet round in a K Hornet chamber to fire form )... I mostly bought it to add to the collection anyways... :o

I put a lot of thought & work coming up with my custom Ruger & revolver in fast twist 22 Hornet ( 1 in 9 twist barrels, standard 22 hornet chambers ) that way I can shoot factory ammo or reloads with ( so far ) up to 68 grain bullets with excellent results...

... this 5.7 Savage is essentially the same gun... but with a bit more durable brass

Very cool rifle. Sounds like you picked the right cartridge for you. So go for it. And not to talk down your choice, just for discusion really, at that range I really like the .22 mag in the role of a 150ish yard plinker/pest getter. With the hornady vmax it's like a precision lazer beam thats easy on the wallet and barrel lol. But that 5.7x28 sure sounds great though i've personaly never used a firearm chambered for it yet.

I'm mildly interested in the idea but that rifle doesn't seem like the best way to go IMO. A 24" barrel with that little cartridge? That's just unneeded length and weight. Speaking of weight... 8.25 pounds with no sights?

Again IMO, I think something more the size and weight of a Ruger 77/22 would be appropriate. The standard blue/wood 77/22 has a 20" barrel and is 6 pounds. Combine that with a flush little rotary magazine of 4-6 rounds and it would be a neat little woods rifle.

^^^ I agree the 77-22 would be a better platform... which ( along with a chambering ) why I chose one for my fast twist 22 Hornet custom rifle...

update...

I went to my local dealer with the print out from the Savage website, with the SKU circled for the 5.7 X 28 chambering... he hasn't seen one, but said he'd like one himself, so called his distributor, who said Savage hasn't released them yet...

WARNING... RUMOR MILL...

word is they are having trouble getting them to feed & extract reliably ???

anyway if / when Savage releases them, I'm sure I'll be able to get one, as this is the dealer that was able to get me one of the few 45-70 side by side double rifles remington / bakail imported on the 1st shipment...

so I'm optimitic I'll get one... just when ???
