I need a Mauser 96 base and rings.

I want to sportorize my Swede 96. I just bought a ramline synthetic stock on sale at Natchez. The question now is where do I get the base. I am thinking I might go ahead and ruin my fine rifle and drill and tap. Suggestions and instructions for such a venture? I am just not that much of a fan of those attached bases and the B-square is too far forward for my liking. Thanks for the advice.

If you are going to drill and tap, I recommend having it done by a professional gunsmith. It is too easy to mess up without a jig, and that is too expensive for a one-off job.

There are a number of bases and rings available, any of which should do a good job. All makers have bases for the Swedish Mauser. Check with the gunsmith or www.brownells.com for a base and scope combination that will do what you want.

You will also need to have the bolt handle bent down (or a new one welded on), and a low scope safety put on. The cock on closing can be altered to cock on opening, but I don't believe you will find that necessary if you are used to the rifle as it is.

This is a Swede (small ring Mauser) Redfied Jr. one-piece base. You will have to buy the rings seperatly. It is possible to find them for less, but Brownell's will have them.

M/96 base

Hello El Rojo; Being a Swedish Mauser collector I would use a barreled action bought to make a sporter and leave the orininal rifle to the collection. But I also believe your rifle do with it as you please so If you are set on using the rifle you have what are you going to do with the stock and hardware that you take off. Also maybe you would be intrested in a trade for a barreled action.

Good luck with the Ramline stock.

I keep mine in the closet to remind myself never to buy another Ramline product.

So far, it's the only Ramline product I haven't thrown away after one or two uses...
