I need a link for AK's please

I had started a post earlier on whether everybody would chose an AK over an AR. AR won, but because I can buy 2 AK's, mags, and ammo for the price of one AR, I'm buying the AK first.

Can you help me with some links on some good deals?

Looking for 7.62x39, regular stock. I don't know the difference between milled or stamp recievers, so If you have the patience to explain that it would be appreciated. Although, I'm sure the links would be to just one or the other (the one that is currently being produced).

Also, is there a difference in the magazines you can buy? If so, which one to get?

Thanks

Milled receiver AKs are, well, milled from a solid block of steel. They tend to have two tangs to mount the buttstock and have a dish ground on the sides of the receiver just above the mag well. They're a pound or so heavier and are considered to be somewhat more durable.

Stamped AKs are stamped from a sheet of steel, folded and rails are welded inside. These have a small, oval, dish stamped in the sides of the receiver, above the magwell. Rivets hold the barrel trunion and buttstock trunion in place and the heads of these rivets are visible. A single tang hold the buttstock in place, from the top. Although maybe not quite a durable as a milled AK, you'd have a hard time wearing out a stamped version. Parts and parts kits are easier to find.

AK mags are nearly flawless. They're robust and fuction with little attention. About the only version you should avoid are the 7.62x39 Bakelite (redish plastic-like) mags, but since these tend to be fairly expensive, don't worry about it. The 5.45x39 Bakelite mags are fine, though (assuming you have a AK-74 5.45x39 clone).

Which is the easiest to find parts and ammo for? The SAR 1, 2 or 3?

I'm not sure of the chamberings...I of course, recognize the 7.62x39 and the 5.45 ...but what does the SAR 3 shoot???

thanks...

I believe parts availability will be a tie between the SAR-1 and the SAR-2. The SAR-3 will be harder to find parts for.

The SAR-1 (7.62X39) and the SAR-2 (5.45X39) will use parts from most AK variants in the proper caliber. And of course, 7.62 and 5.45 are the calibers for most AK's.

I have a SAR-3 and have not had good luck finding spares for it. However, in a worst-case scenario, most of its parts can be adapted from other AK's with a few exceptions. I think the bolt will be the hardest to come by (though TAPCO just got them). The extractor is also unique and I havent seen any of those around. The firing pin is unique, but a "usually reliable source" says they can be made by shortening an AK-74 firing pin. I have not verified this.

Robinson arms are making/importing some that seem pretty good. Same guys who are doing the Expeditionary rifle.

I'm surprised more American companies haven't started to produce them yet. I would think they could still may them for less than an AR.

I think that is the one I would buy now if I was in the market for another one. Unless I could fine a Polytech Legend for a fair price (not likely).

Take a look at rifles offered by Global Trades Co./Arsenal USA. Mine should be in later next week, so if you can wait I'll give you a range report on the thing.

The SAR rifles I saw weren't that pretty, and the frustrating thing around here is that folks had jacked the prices up to $400+ on the things. Ordering sight-unseen is a tough proposition, but in my case a local store had the AKM version of the Global Trades rifle in stock, and it was far and above the best AK I've seen in a long time in terms of fit and finish and overall appearance.

Just a thought, I'll keep you posted as to the range report on this rilfe.
