I must be crazy...or am I?

I posted a while back that my 8 year old son loves to shoot my little CZ 83 in .380. He is thin and about 60lbs, not your biggest kid. I upgraded the .380 to a CZ 83 Mak in Nickel and wanted to go plinking yesterday...so I took my son, the CZ and a couple of other guns with me. (Previously he had loved the .380 and was quite good with my CZ Compact 9mm.) Recently I had traded some guns around and ended up with no more Compact but had acquired a nice Kahr K40. I took it with me yesterday.
He quickly got familiar with the little CZ and was shooting it pretty well. I pulled out my Kahr and we were plinking taking turns shooting cans and such. He looked at the Kahr and stated that we should trade guns...mine was smaller and would fit him better.
I smiled and explained that the K' had more kick...etc. He just wanted me to "assist him" to see what it was like. Assisting him is just helping with the recoil...he still sights it in and shoots it.
I did so and he didnt seem to mind the recoil much. He wanted to shoot it by himself....."Dad, I will be fine....my hands fit this one better and I can hang on...." OK...try it. He shot 8 or 9 rounds by himself and the last 3 he nailed 3 pop cans in a row.....he was grinning bigger than after he shot the 9mm alone. I told him he was brave and I was crazy for letting him try it....he just asked me " why?" I explained that alot of grown ups I shoot with dont like the gun and the recoil....it snaps pretty good! He liked it more...."can we call grandpa?" " I want to tell him..." Im driving home listening to the conversation ....I hear " grandpa...Im 8 and I can shoot my dads 40...do you think when Im 10 I can shoot your Casull?"
I could hear the roar of laughter from my father on my cell across my truck......I just thought to myself....."what have I done?"

Jesse is a great shot...but after all of this, I think I see a 22 in my future we can take plinking....cheap to shoot and It will lengthen the time between now and the Casull! Thought you all would enjoy the story of my little "no gun is to big" son. If this desire for bigger and badder guns is inherent....I will blame my father!
After all its his Casull! :D

Shoot well

Nope, not crazy at all.

At 8 years old I started shooting my Dad's Colt Police Positive Special, with his assitance of course. Soon thereafter he gave me my very own Colt Challenger .22LR. About 40 handguns later, here I am. When I grew up I had a healthy respect for firearms and their capabilities. I would have never even thought to pull one out and "play" with it or point it at a friend. All I had to do was ask and we were out shooting. Teach them right when they are young enough to listen, and it will stick with them throughout their lives.

And I still have that Colt PPS and Challenger. Plan on giving them to MY kids when they get a little older.

Great story, Eric!

Out of the mouths of babes...
My 5.5 year old niece loves to shoot my East German Makarov, and is a plenty good shot at tin cans out to 30 feet or so. When I confessed to her that men of even my age often complained about the "kick", she replied, with dead seriousness, "those must be some silly little men, uncle Peter". I think I'll get her a .45 for her 1st grade graduation:D .

Eric....

I think it's great!! I'm impressed that he's even shooting at the ripe old age of eight, let alone that he's shooting well or that he can handle the "big bores" as well as he apparently does.

I think some folks are just bothered more by recoil than others. I'm 61, done my time in the military, been an LEO, etc., and I've NEVER liked the big bore guns - .45, etc. Sure, I can shoot 'em, but I just don't like the recoil, the noise, etc., so I've got a TON of 9mm (and smaller) guns.

Keep that boy shootin' and see how many of his friends and their parents, you can get into our sport. Don't exclude the girls either. They tend to be very coachable.

Keep up the good work. Aim small; miss small. ;)
