I picked up my first Colt Python, a six-inch version with Royal Blue finish. Here she is:

I'll be shoooting it for the first time on Tuesday.

This is what a Master polisher with probably 15 to 20 years experience can produce.

The only difference between Ruger's flat black bluing and the Python mirror bright blue, is the amount and quality of the polishing done to the metal before the actual chemical bluing process.

The hot salts chemical bluing process is the same as used by all gun makers.
Only the polishing is different.

Incredibly, the Pythons made back in the 1950's had even BETTER polishing.

Dfariswheel,

You're quite right about the polishing providing that beautiful shine. However I'm told by two competent gunsmiths that the blueing salts & solutions used by Colt are very difficult to duplicate which accounts for the difference in the color between Colt and the other gun makers. Colts have always had a slightly different, some say "bluer" color, than S&W and Ruger.

Lunde - Sweet! Send me a PM, we're in the same area and I'd like to know where you found that little gem! Also, you might try taking some photos of your Python on a red or emerald green (felt) background to contrast with the blueing. I'm also interested in talking to you about gun photo techniques. Yours are outstanding (as good as DHart's nice work!).

My eyes are still hanging out of their sockets, ever since I took my first look at this "Exquisite" Colt Python! Congratulations Dr. Lunde, on a fantastic polishing job on that Python(As it is truly a real "Gem" now!)! :D

Where do you people FIND these things?

Damn, the only Colt revolver I've EVER seen at ANY gun shop was an engraved SAA for $3600.

I've never seen a python or Anaconda, or other Colt DA revolver.

BTW, if my jealous psychotic episode didn't reveal it, I think that's a darn nice revolver you've got there! :D

That's a Winner!

Magnum88,

Congrats on your new Python! It's stunning. Pythons are as photogenic as 1911's, but we don't see photos of them near as much. Between the two I know which I'D rather use for target practice OR self-defense. I love Pythons, and sold the 3 I use to have and I regret it.

Respectfully,
Eggman

LarryC,

Sorry dude, but lunde got the new Python, I just had a psychotic fit of jealousy over it. . .LOL

But you're right they sure are purty, and take a darn nice picture.

That lite blue background really makes it stand out ! Nice, nice, nice.
You're going to fire it on Tuesday, I'll bet you'll enjoy the heck out it.
I never have shot mine. I bought it back in 1999,2000. I may just have
to pull it out of the rug and look it over. Haven't looked at in 6-7 months.

Pretty serious looking wheelguns aren't they... :)

I have 3 Pythons. 4", 6" and a nickel 8".

I got them because everyone was talking how nice they shoot. JMO, but I didn't find them as satisfying to shoot as my S&W's or Ruger SA's. I didn't like the stock plow grip that comes w/ it either. It hurt when I shot .357s out of it. I went and got a rubber Hogue grip for it and it felt a lot better.

I'm not a big fan of Colt revolvers in general, but I'm the first to admit that the Royal Blue treatment is probably the finest American blue job ever created.

Great pictures, great gun. Down in Miami, it is hard to find a gun like that in reasonable condition. Yours looks very close to new, congratulations and enjoy.

That is a beautiful weapon. :)

That is correct as to the finish, however I would submit that the underlying metallurgy is superior also, due to the forging versus the casting of the Ruger. JMTC

Hi Lunde,

Well that is an awesome Python, and a beautiful picture too. What did you clean the exterior with to give it that beautiful luster? Did you polish or wax it? or did you use something else? Its a gorgeous gun and the reason why used Pythons will always be in demand. Enjoy it always.

I didn't use any chemicals, cleaners, or polishes, and simply used a Flitz microfiber polishing cloth to bring out its natural luster. And, I shot it for the first time on Tuesday evening. Sweetness it is. It handled full-power .357 Magnum loads with the greatest of ease.

Thats amazing Dr. Ken, I picked up a Flitz cloth tonight, but haven't used it yet. I did clean my S&W model 27-2 with Boeshield T-9 today to see how it handles the finish, this after using ProTec gun oil which initially looked great, but left a mottled finish after a few days. Time will tell how the Boeshield does, but it looks great right now. Thanks again for the info. :)

Lunde - I can only say that looking at those pics brought a tear to my eye. That is simply a beautiful revolver. I've never owned a Colt Python before, but I think that needs to change. I hope you can sleep at night after doing this to me :D
