I love my GP-100

I got it about a month ago. It is a 3" stainless fixed-sight model. I have fired about 700 rounds through it, about 500 .38s and 200 magnums. I have improved my skills immensely using the Ruger. My past experience with pistols was auto only, and I now feel if you can shoot a revolver well you can handle any auto. The GP-100 is so pleasant to shoot that if I could afford it I would shoot magnums all the time, it brings a grin to your face very time. It has handled everything from dirt cheap filthy lead island reloads to powerful factory magnum rounds without a hiccup, except it didn't like raised primers on some of the cheap reloads I bought. I discovered you can pull the trigger very slightly (pointed in a safe direction) and rotate the cylinder to discover raised primers before you begin shooting. I've only been using that ammo since it is a cheap way to gain experience and skill. ALso cleaning experience :)

I picked the Ruger largely based on information here on TFL, it is a great resource. I had to purchase it sight unseen since the revolver selection on Guam is slim to none. I couldn't be more pleased with the purchase. I have dry fired it a lot (ok per the instructions) and the trigger seems to have smoothed out. I have no frame of reference but the trigger is fine for me. Anyway, I think it is a great all-around handgun and a perfect first revolver. I just had to tell the world.

I think the 3" fixed sight GP100's are the coolest wheelguns Ruger has offered since the demise of the Speed/Security Sixes.

The GP100 is a great wheelgun. I own the blued 6" model and enjoy it immensely. A good solid handgun and actually a "modern" revolver. Designed and developed in the mid-80's.

I bought my first handgun in the late 80's, a 6" GP100 with full under lug. After buying and selling quite a few handguns over the years its still in my collection. Its one of my favorites and I doubt I'd ever part with it. In fact, a friend has a short barell one that Im thinking of buying. I'm not sure if its 2" or 3". Anyone shoot the shorty? I'd recommend the GP to anyone.

PS Has anyone had any experience with the SP101?

I am glad you asked that, I just got back from running 50 rounds of 125 gr jhp and 30 rounds of 180gr sjhp. It beat me up a bit :) in a good way. I have the GP 100 in 3 in barrell. My ruger p95 shoots so much smoother, but it isnt a .357 either :) my friends 4 in was nice to shoot as well. He didnt like the 3 in tho. Good luck with the next purchase... I am planning mine now.

I've got a 4" stainless GP,which I love. It lives on a diet of cast bullet reloads now,and is basically a target gun for plinking.
It's a good thing I have a quality DA revolver, because I can't shoot DA autos worth a hoot!

I love my 3" fixed sight stainless gp100 to. That thing is an awsome shooter. I have a 6" version and a 2.25" dao sp101. Just gotta love those ruger da's. the 3"gp is my favorite slightly over the sp.

What bullet weight (in .357) have you guys had the best luck shooting to POA out of the 3" fixed-sight model?

I have a 3" GP but have only fired 110gr WWB .357's sofar, which hit low at 15 yds. Should I try a 125gr or 158gr load next?

Also, suppose a 158gr .357 load is close to POA, does that mean the same bullet weight in .38 Spl will also be the best bet?

I love the fixed sight Rugers and am sorry they have been so diminished in the current line-up. For a long time I thought my favorite Ruger was the 4 inch, half-lug, fixed-sight GP but since I acquired my first 3"...I'm not quite as sure. They are both great but the 3 inch is truly a beaut and at least the SS full lug version is still catalogued. Terrific revolvers!

It was my first hand gun and now its my favorite.

Good choice on your first revolver. It will never wear out.

I've been tempted to buy one of the 3" fixed sight trade-ins I've seen advertised by a wholesaler.

I bought a blue 3" GP100 this year and I'm quite pleased with it as my "house gun". It shoots nicely and handles the full 357 mag loads just fine. It is no Smith and it certainly isn't a Colt, but I like it all the same. It is the only gun that stays loaded inside the house.

Wow, great replies. Mr Camp, I carefully read your gp-100 review months ago which also helped me decide on the Ruger. LH2, in my very limited experience the 158gr shoot closer to POA, I have also shoot the 110 WWB. The WWB are still my defense load since they are a light load and selection here is limited, plus I figure if I have to use it it will be at a range where it doesn't matter. Great to hear from all the GP-100 owners out there.
