I still remember (when I was too young to buy a gun) the charter bulldog .44 spl ads, muzzle view, one pound of protection....

I really like the old ads, especially the Iver Johnson ones. Can you imagine a firearm company running an ad these days that shows a small child in bed and playing with one of their guns. It's such a bad concept, it's good.

I would use a 20-1 ratio for values c. 1950. Gas was $.20 a gallon (OK, 19.9 cents), a Coke was a nickel, and a hamburger $.15. That would "translate" the $32.50 S&W to $650 today, which is not too far off.

Monkey wards

I remember as a kid looking at Montgomery Wards catalogues and salivating ovr the Ruger .44 mag carbine.

Mail order!

I always live the old Sears Robuck catalogs too..
I'll post some in a few, but here is some S&W for ya
Where's my time machine when I need it?

No the thing is, if a company put out an ad that had say " the smart mans way to stop crime", well theyd get sued by those liberals for promoting self defense.

Ok... a couple more...

Notice how much more literate and descriptive the ads were back then?

Yeah, the 20x rate of inflation sounds more like it.
Lots of folks only earned about $35 to $50 per week in 1950s.
Depending on government claims about inflation is guaranteed to be misleading.

another couple more...

g.willikers, not only did society speak and write in a more literate fashion, it was not considered shameful to advocate carrying a handgun on your person or in your car. my how the laws have come against us since then huh?
