I was the winning bider on a used 657 with a 6in barrel.http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=35557742
This will be the only revolver I currently own. I am probably going to have the barrel shortened to 5in to make it a little better for carry. It MAY replace my 10mm as my all purpose carry/hunting gun. Comparison will be easier now that I have one of each.
Looks like I need another set of dies. That's fine, if I didn't reload I couldn't afford to shoot as much as I like.

I have the same gun! Shes a hoss :) . Loaded close to the max with H110 she will make big fire balls and you will think you are shooting a 44mag. Hope you enjoy your new gun!

Frank,

Welcome to the strange world of .41 Magnum owners! I know you say this will be your only revolver you currently own, but I dare say you might find yourself looking at other .41 Mags in the not too distant future!

As to cutting the barrel down to 5".... A few thoughts.
A) Contact S&W for pricing on this job. They might be reasonable. They might just say no.
B) Remember that the roll stampings will be off-center after the job is done and that may decrease resale value of your gun down the road.
C) Consider buying a 2nd barrel in 4" and having it installed. I like the 4" models and they carry well.
D) Holsters for 5" N-Frame revolvers are scarce as turkey lips. Most are custom orders.

Most ammo available in this caliber tends to be the hotter "hunting" loads - like the 210gr JSP/JHP at 1300 fps. For self-defense ammo, I'd suggest the Winchester Silvertip 175gr JHP. For plinking and/or self-defense look for a 210gr LSWC loaded to around 900-1100 fps. Georgia-Arms has this load available at 1100fps (564 ft-lbs) for $14.00/box.

If you reload, you can save tons of money by reloading once-fired cases with a 210gr LSWC round and load it to 950-1000 fps for a range load.

I believe that is light reflecting off the gun from the left hand side. I don't care so I didn't bother asking, but I believe that is what it is.The seller didn't mention any blemishes and he has an outstanding seller rating with lots of sales. 98 out of 99 positive feedbacks.

Good Job!

If I had seen that one first, SWMBO would be mad at me AGAIN! :D

A set of Herrett's Shooting Masters on that and look out! Just hope it shoots as well as my 6" 57 (Blue). They truly are a joy to shoot.

BTW, I think it's Kramer that makes a 5" N frame holster. And I see thay are still offered in the latest Dillon "Blue Press" catalog. ;)

If you want to make it easier to carry make it a 4 inch barrel. I don't think you would notice the difference of one inch in a holster
