I'm sure some of you thought I'd never make up my mind and You've gotten sick of my FAL questions for the last few months but I finally did it.

1)What do I need as far as Cleaning kits, site tools, grease or any other accessories?

2)I'm getting the Scope mount and I haven't settled on a Scope yet either. Any suggestions on a Scope?

A few thoughts...

You can't shoot farther than you can see, and there's no need to see [much] farther than your rifle is accurate.

FWIW, I have a Leupold 2.5-8x on one of my FALs, and in retrospect, it is more than I need. A compact 1-4x would probably work out better.

Another option to consider is a small fixed power (eg: Compact ACOG) or red-dot (eg: Aimpoint Comp/M, Trijicon Reflex II).

Okay, first call up DSA and get a huge stack of 20-rd magazines, and maybe one 5 or 10-rounder (to use on the bench.)

Next, Valdada makes a 4x24 scope that has an illuminated reticle, rangefinder, and bullet-drop cam, all for $350 retail. You might consider it for your FAL. http://www.valdada.com/scopes/tactical/4x24m1/index.htm

Get tons of ammo. I like Hirtenberger 147grn for inexpensive plinking.

Get a front sight key.

As for cleaning kits, I just use Hoppes #9, Breakfree CLP, and generic lithium grease on mine. Get a decent cleaning rod.

That's all I can think of right now. Let us know how your FAL shoots!

Later,
Chris

At what ranges do you plan on shooting it? Is it a range rifle for long distance shooting or did you buy it as a just-in-case defense gun and plinker?
If the former, a nice Leupold (if you can afford it) would be good. If the latter, I would reccommend something like the Aimpoint CompM red dot sight.

Lots of mags and mag pouches. Canadian stuff is the best FAL LBE, but the yoke and belt are hard to find. S. African and Israeli are pretty good. A mag charger would probably be nice. Otherwise, stock up on the good surplus ammo while it's still available relatively cheap.

I'm personally fond of the FAL bipods. It's incredible what a good bipod does for your long-range accuracy. The FAL bipods are amongst the most innocuous yet effective available.

SodaPop, with all due respect, I think you've been urged several times to come on over to the FAL files...when are you gonna do it? Go here: http://www.fnfal.com/cgi-bin/forums/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro and enjoy true FALness.

There have been many, many, discussions there about best LBEs, assault vests, cleaning kts, you name it. The site is obviously FAL specific, and has quite a bit of action...TFL is great with regards to general gun topics, but why not use an excellent FAL specific site for this? I hope to see you there. :)

"Boing" I am getting the DSA STG58 Type II it comes with a Bipod which is something I wanted anyway.
"Steve Smith" I am over there but just haven't posted. There is so much at that site that All I do is read old posts.
"HardBall" I don't own a rifle without a sling on it. I'll defanitely get one.
"RikWriter" I am going to be shooting no further than 500yds. I am also getting the DSA scope mount seems like there is nothing better. I like the Scope
"Christopher II" Suggested but I have little experience with Optics like that.
I need to extend the stock atleast 1 inch to fit me right and I don't see extensions on DSA's site?

Nope, no stock extensions. I sure felt left out of that list. You WILL need that buttstock removal tool and bolt disassembly tool one day.........

aaawww "George" I'm going to need a tool kit to sight in the rifle and adjust the gas, sorry I left ya out! I got the FAL armorers video last week at a gunshow just because I am very unfamiliar with the FAL. I guess that proves I'm an amatuer if I need a video to help me learn how to use a rifle LOL!!!!!! Hopefully I won't blow a hole in the TV when I get the gun.

Christopher II do you know how to read that scope you suggested?
Oh and by the way I GOT THE GUN!!!!!!!!!!! I have the DSA mount but I still haven't gotten a scope.

How to read it? If you mean how to use the rangefinder, I think so (now is probably the time to admit that I don't actually own one. :o)

You see the lines in the bottom left quadrant of the scope, one straight, one curved? That's your rangefinder. The 1,7 is euro-speak for 1.7 meters, or the height of an average man. You set the average man-sized target in between those lines so that it just fits. If it fits between the two lines at the 2 mark, it's 200 meters away. If it fits between the lines at the 10 mark, it's 1000 meters away, and you should really think twice about touching a round off.

Then, you just crank the distance into the bullet-drop cam, center the target in the crosshairs, and cut loose.

If anyone else knows more about the Valdada scope line, please speak up. I don't want to give any wrong information...

Later,
Chris

Yes I get it now thanks! What exactly is the Bullet "Cam"? I'm not familiar with the terminology? I'm a student around here and not a gun expert. I am ordering the scope after my next pay check.
