I just got back from the range, where I shot my new .41!

I'm in LOVE!

The first couple of shots I peeled off (Remington 210-gr. JSP) I had people wondering over to see what I was shooting. It BARKS! It also bites after a bit. I put rubber grips on it (Hogue) before I shot it. I can't even imagine what it would have been like with the wood grips. Probably VERY painful.

At 10 yards it also was hitting right to point of aim with that ammo.

I think I have a new gun to try on bowling pins! I just have to load some lighter loads for that, though. Maybe 210 at about 1,000 fps.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

I have been reloading and shooting .41 Magnums since before Winchester would make brass for them. I use a 3 inch for CCW and a 4 inch for hunting and "other" functions.

I load:
8.0 grains of UNIQUE....900 to 1000 feet per second.
7.3 grains of UNIQUE
5.6 grains of UNIQUE
5.0 grains of UNIQUE
7.0 grains of Winchester 231 is a bit hot.

My standard "working load" is 17.5 grains of 2400.

Madison,

Thanks for the loading data.

I don't use Unique anymore, but since I have a bunch left I may give it a try in this gun.

I use mostly 231, with 296 for heavy Magnum loads.

Where do you get bullets? On line or a local source?

I'm having a hell of a time finding ammo in Northern Virginia.

Nice Mike...gonna keep it under your pillow for a while till it gets used to its new home?

For target and practice I like RedLine custom hard cast. Very hard, no leading out to 1200fps. Their .41 215gr SWC runs $40.00 per thou in small lots. I get bout 10% down gettin 5 thou or more at a time. I get em from Bruce Maerker bgfx@northlink.com

Sam...my favorite nine is 9X32mm

I never had much luck with the .41 with 296 - but that was a few years ago. 2400 generally gave me the best combination of accuracy and abscence of pressure signs.

Try Blue Dot. It's a great powder in the .41 Mag. 215 gr. hard cast & 13.0 grains of Blue Dot is a top load and is very accurate in my Mdl. 57. For a good plinker, 9.0 grs (min) Blue Dot, same bullet. Mag primers.

I wouldn't go over 18 grs, 2400 with 215/220 hard cast bullets. That's a top load when I use 2400. I mentioned that I killed a large black bear with my handload, which was 19 grs 2400 with a 210 gr. Sierra J.H.P bullet. No problem, but I dropped back to 18.0 grs with that same bullet.

FWIW. J.B.

In the factory ammo dept. I have always prefered the federal 210hp load. Its fast but very easy on the hand,I have a hard time getting the gun out of the wifes paws so I can shoot it with this load. She sure does like that combo. :) :) Even my light unique loads seem to kick more, wish I knew what powder they use.

Mike I.--Good range report.

BTW, if the wood grips are the original S&W factory walnut service stocks for the Model 58, I suggest keeping them, even if they're never used. My Model 58 doesn't have its original grips, which had been removed and unfortunately lost by the previous owner. I've been trying to find replacements for them without success. As you probably know, the service stocks that S&W installed on the Model 58 are unique to that model and the Model 520 (the sides are rounded at the bottom, as opposed to the bottom of most N-frame service stocks, which is straight across).

OTOH, if you do have the original Model 58 factory stocks and you'd care to part with them, let me know! ;)
