Lockup is tight no wobble no hammer push off. Only concern seems to be some pinpoint rust

Those old Official Police 38's, as well as it's rival, the Model 10/M&P 38 Smith & Wesson's are nice guns. The more of them I see, the better I like them.

I'll tell you what I'd do about that rust. A lot of people won't agree with me, but I've done it often with no problem. Use a little Flitz on it, and gently rub it off. Work slowly and carefully and you shouldn't damage the finish.

^ I'd use some gun oil and some 0000 (important) steel wool on it first.

Don't be too rough on her. I personally think it looks fine, it's a beautiful revovler! LOVE those old Colts and S&W service revolvers!!!

What are you going to use it for?

Did you guys ever watch Adam12?

The Cops carried with S&W Model 14 or 15 while the bad guys carried Colts!!

Gary

I think there is enough corrosion of the metal that just steel wool or flitz won't do much for that finish. My recommendation is to just oil the gun to prevent more damage, then shoot it and enjoy. Like that dent in a used car, you forget about it after a while.

Oil and a bronze brush. Lots of oil. And after every pass or two, blot the dirty oil (with the very abrasive iron oxide) off.

It may be bare steel under the rust, but, it's better than the rust continuing.

Ballistol or Corrosion X are very good.

An alternative to oil and brush for rust like this is to take a No.2 lead (graphite) pencil and scrub the rust spots with the point, then wipe with a clean cloth. If there is no pitting, the rust will be loosened and wiped away, leaving a dark gray finish on the spots. It sure doesn't look new, but does look better.

For light surface rust and "freckles", Turtle Wax Chrome Polish and Rust Remover is good to use.
Be careful with 0000 steel wool and oil, rub too hard and it will remove existing bluing and get down to bare steel. Copper wool is safer, but hard to find. The Turtle Wax Chrome polish was recommended by another and I had some in the garage. Three sessions cleaned up a grungy, freckled and lightly surface rusted model 58 S&W. Doesn't look like new but much better than it did.

That's not enough rust that you'd have to remove any metal, so that's good. I am also a proponent of 0000 steel wool and CLP. Sadly, the Police Positive that came into my possession was so rusted in places that removing material was absolutely necessary and the looks suffered greatly because of it. Don't refinish that gun as you will never be able to replace that beautiful Colt Royal Blue.

Hey guys need just a little more help. this dude needs a complete clean up and oiling. Which screw holds the yoke in? Right side or left?

Gary

Cylinder will be released by the screw on the right side of the frame. Taking off the latch on the left will give you access to the plate and everything under it. I can't remember if there's another screw there as I'm 800 miles away on holiday and can't look at mine. Be very careful taking the plate off as it is a very precise fit and you don't want to bend anything. A liberal spray should handle everything. While i have repaired mine and it's not rocket science to get it back together inside, I wouldn't recommend disassembling anything unless absolutely necessary. Keep the name Jack First in mind when your baby goes down and you need parts.

Looks like it was made in 1950.

On Jan 15, 2013, I bought a Colt Official Police made in 1962 38sp from a gun store where it was on consignment from an estate. As I drove home and the freeway slowed down, I looked over at the revolver on the passenger seat, I could not believe that I actually had it.

I could feel in the moment overwhelmed by my fortune to acquire this revolver. It was so beautiful. Then I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a car sliding towards me fast. It smashed into the rear of my car. My vehicle had a scratch and a crack in the bumper, but hers was losing coolant and going nowhere.

I looked at that woman with tattoos on her breasts and her crummy little wrecked car, and decided I needed nothing from her, and left. I still have the crack in my bumper and that safe queen Official Police is still beautiful.

My Official Police is considered a Pre-War model since it was shipped by Colt on Dec. 22, 1941.

Its serial number is 3852XX. It is also a good solid revolver and enjoyable to shoot. Can't say the trigger Is as smooth as my Smith's.

I think you own some Smith revolvers from your past post. Let us know how yours compare.
