I hate my Remy 597 22LR.

Okay. I'm about to saw my Remy 597 22LR in half. Ever since I bought the gun, I have had nothing but failure to feed after failure to feed. I think the magazines on these rifles are the worst ever invented.

The gun itself functions flawlessly. . .except the magazine will not perform. I've bought as much as 5 or 6 mags for this dumb gun. Each mag has similar problems in that the spring is so weak that it will not push the bullets up. And because of it, it won't feed. Sometime, becuase the spring is so weak, the bullet will lodge itself unto the magazine lip causing a jam. I've had it!

Yes, I've even gone as far as contacting Remington head quarter and they said that the first, second, and third Generation Mags do have problems. However, they have perfected the magazines and sent me a new one. Same thing-failure to feed. Somethings never change.

I think who ever invented the magazine was smoking something funning or somet'in. You guys have that problem? Is all hope for this gun lost?
 
There's just got to be a simple fix, but I sure don't know what it would be. Seems to me that we'd be hearing more reports like this, if that rifle were generally defective.

Remington's offering 30-rd mags for that rifle now, but I guess that doesn't apply to Kalifornians. ;)
 
I admit to not being familiar with that gun, but is it possible there is another problem, like a defective magazine catch not keeping the magazine in place properly?

Had one, same issue, traded it off. Too picky about ammo for a .22; it wouldn't run off Remington ammo ironically, but some other brands were a little more reliable.
 
I have a 597 rem and love it. Never had any problems. Just take it apart when you first get it, clean it back to bare metal/plastic and lightly polish up any rough edges or burs and then lightly reoil and reassemble. Go easy on the torque though, the rod guides tend to bow out slightly with too much torque (factory spec is even a bit much).

I've got 3 third gen factory mags and one of the 30 round clips. The springs are all very stiff, infact when they were new it was VERY challenging to fully load them.
My remmy seems to function well with a wide variety of ammo, and I usually use the cheap stuff :-( but it doesn't care, even when its dirty its very reliable.
One Small Issue I had was when the clips were new, I would get a failure, usually after the first shot was fired. The 30 round clip would often fail 3 or 4 times before it was empty. BUT Now that the clips have been loaded up and fired empty a few times each they function flawlessly. I virtually never have a failure under regular conditions.....though if I hunt a long time in -20 weather without firing a shot it sometimes just fires one shot and sticks, but a good hard hand cocking breaks her free and gets her spitting like hell again. A different (colder weather) lubricant would likely cure that though.
