I had no intentions a purchasing a revolver...

or any other gun for that matter....but while perusing a local garage sale/swap meet Facebook page I came across something interesting. The subject item is a S&W 19-5 357. It was listed for $600 but I thought that was a little on the high side for a gun with no box or paperwork. I asked for better pictures and got a couple of cell phone pics that really didn't tell the whole story of the condition....it didn't look bad but I still thought the price was too high.

Fast forward and the fella selling the gun (for his mother) has checked with a local gun shop on it's value.....The guys in the store told him that it was worth between $450 and $500 retail considering the condition. He adds a response to his ad and says that he'd take $360.

Needless to say that I jumped on it. I could tell from the pictures that it wasn't in perfect shape and there were a few very minor scratches on the sides of the barrel. I told him when I hold it and inspect it I'll be able to tell him if I'd give $360 for it. Looking over the gun I decided that it's worth more than what he wants and I handed over the cash.

Other than normal wear and tear the gun seems to be functionally perfect. The trigger is outstanding to say the least! It may not be as stout as my GP100 but it sure has that S&W sweetness about it.....

Congratulations on a nice find. None of my guns are safe queens, so they all show "character", (sounds better than wear and tear) .
I worked with a guy who bought gold plated tools, (made by Snap-On for a while anyway). They couldn't be used. I never understood it.

It may not be as stout as my GP100
I have three Ruger revolvers and a handful of Ruger semi-auto pistols... and FAR more Smith & Wesson guns.

I'd rather have that Model 19 than most any GP-100. You're right, it may not be as stout. But it's (EASILY!) the one I'd choose, head to head.

Hard to really judge it's good & bad from the one single picture and not having it in my hands, but in the circles I travel, that would have a tag hanging from it (not one cent lower) than $600. Some stores would price the tag higher. Actual sell price-- you'd have to haggle it out.

No place that I know of, not a show, certainly not any store, and no forum full of gun swappers is likely to sell that at $360.

You got a fantastic deal.

Now THAT is an incredible deal! Those don't come around very often and you have to be able to jump when they come around. Congrats!

It happened at just the right time. I hadn't bought a gun in a while and my wife understands when deals like this come along that I'll be way ahead in the long run so I might as well buy it. Better than money in the bank!

Model 19's are great.

And this particular piece is in excellent shooting condition; but not so nice to keep preserved in a safe.

Shoot it. Enjoy. Well done.

Congratulations on your new Model 19. I have a couple of S&W's sister guns a Model 66 and they are great shooters.
