S&W M27-2:

I got "Lucky" today, in finding a NIB(In "Presentation" case)M27-2("Blued")with a 6-inch barrel! It is "Unfired"! I had been looking(Here in CA!)for a very long time, trying to find a "Mint" M27! This was my day, for sure!

I walked into my favorite gun shop and looked in the gun case(And, found nothing?)! Then, I asked the gun shop owner, if any new "Collectible" revolvers had come in? He said no! At that moment, as I was turning around(To leave)I spotted an opened, wood "Presentation" case(On a big table of antique guns)that looked like it contained an S&W N-frame? I said to the gun shop owner, "What's that"? He said, oh! Then he handed me the wood cased revolver. And, B-I-N-G-O! There was a truly "Magnificent" M27-2! My eyes "Popped out"!!! My timing was GREAT! You guessed it! I bought this gun! WOWEEEE!!!!! The serial number is N7351XX(Made in 1980)!

QUESTIONS:

1)This M27-2, came in a slightly smaller wood "Presentation" case(A little thinner than usual)and inside there was only a foam rubber pad in the inside top of the lid, and there was the molded plastic cradle in the inside bottom of this case, to hold the M27-2 in place. This was just the black plastic cradle(But, there was no velvet cover over it-like is usually found?)? My question here is, if this is the way this gun would have been shipped(Or, was there some type of velvet flocking, that was over the plastic cradle?)?

2)In number one(Above)if there was some velvet(Or other type of material, flocking?)can anybody tell me what the correct color(And type of material?)was used? Note: This wood presentation case, was the one that had a small rectangular shaped(Tool compartment)on the lower bottom of the plastic gun cradle(With a removable lid & a small knob on the lid)!

3)Does anyone have any pictures of their M27-2's that might have come in the same(Above described)type of wood presentation case? And/or, does anybody know how I could obtain either the "Exact" material that is correct for my presentation case(Or, at least a similar material, that would pass for a direct match and, in the right color(As closely as is possible?)? Any help, will be greatly appreciated? Thanks!

You are lucky

The material was blue, but thats about all I can help you with.
I had a 5 inch 27 that some one offered me to much money for and I was stupid enough to let it go.
Try to find a 5 inch mint 27 ultra rare.
I have several other N frames and one is a 25 and the gun is also like new but the materal in the case is a mess. I contacted Smith to see if they could help me in any way. To buy one, or contact who they used to manufacture them and anything.
All I can say is they sure make good guns, but dont try to get any thing else out of them, like pulling hens teeth.
I have one question, NIB how much?????

Price of M27-2(In CA)!

OZZIEMAN:

The price of my M27-2(Out the door!)was $650! The asking price was $650(Before any fees or taxes)!

Congratulations! I felt the same way when I found my M28-2. I missed a M27 recently at a bit over $760.00 for a 3.5" blued model. I may find one in nickel, who knows? The flocking was applied by dipping the plastic in glue and then in royal blue flocking. I have restored one by using model car and railroad scenery flocking. I suggest you go haunt the hobby stores.

Here's mine. I simply went to the fabric store and bought some blue velvet. I cut a piece big enough to cover the insert with the gun in it and put it in the case. Yes, it has a few wrinkles, but it was quick, and it preserves the disentigrating flocking beneath it.

Attaching blue velvet for flocking?

ExavierBreath:

1Do you mean, that you just folded the blue velvet around the plastic gun cradle(Underneath)and then just set it back into the gun case(Without any gluing or anything?)? Please clarify?

2)What about the little tool compartment lid? How did you stick the blue velvet to the lid(Glue-or?)? Name specifically, what you used?

3)Was there supposed to be any blue flocking inside the upper gun case lid(Or, not?)originally as these cases came from S&W? Mine has only a foam rubber pad pressed into the top lid? And, I don't know if somebody just put this in there or not? Or, was there not supposed to be anything at all, lining the lid? Please clarify this, also? Thanks!

4)And, thank you very much, for the picture of your gun case! Mine looks exactly the same(Except the cradle is for a 6-inch barrel)! Your picture was worth a thousand words!!!!

Yes, I cut the velvet about 6 inches larger than the insert in all directions. I then aligned it over the insert, and folded it underneath it. I laid the gun in the insert, and of course, that made the velvet pull out from underneath the insrt a bit. I pressed it into the depression for the tools. I then picked up the whole thing and set it into the case. I used a plastic spoon to help align things to smooth out the wrinkles as best I could. The plastic insert itself holds the velvet in place. I used a scrap of velvet and a bit of hot glue to cover the little lid, folding the velvet underneath neatly. I then covered the inside of the lid with a piece of velvet, hotglued to the outer piece of velvet. I poked my hole through the velvet and screwed on the knob. On mine, I too, had a plain piece of foam rubber in the lid. I covered this in blue velvet as well. If you know someone who either sews or does upholstery, that might help if you think you do not have the skills.

My case restoration is imperfect at best. Some might say I butchered the presentation case, and that is OK. I like the looks of it better now, and IMHO S&W could have done a better job making the case for this gun. FWIW, I used the same skills to build a case for my Luger and P1 as well as a few other cases. I would NEVER consider doing it for profit.

The foam inside the lid?

XavierBreath:

Since you had mentioned, that your gun case, had foam rubber(Also)inside the top lid, do you think that S&W might have shipped these particular gun cases this way-or, do you believe that somebody might have just added the thick foam rubber, later? It seems "Ironic" that my case is just like yours(With the foam rubber inside!)? Please comment? Thanks!

I'm not certain, but I suspect they were shipped that way. You can check over at the S&W forums (see above link) to find out for sure.
