Picked up a new revolver this weekend. Its a S&W airweight bodyguard with a stainless cylinder. susposedly its a police revolver surplus. anybody know anything about this? The story I got is these were issued as backup/offduty guns and the stainless cylinder was used to disade accusations of "throw-down" guns. I personally don't know how true any of this is but this little gun shoots. And light, wow. I put a couple hundred rounds of standard loads (some 158 swc & 125 JHP's) I plan to use factory wadcutters in it for now until I find a SD std load I like
NO +p's for this little gun. I think I may add a steel framed version to the armory as well as I find I like shooting this little gun
I want a version for the house as well as carry.

Is it the Model 838? If so, they are excellent guns. I have one and routinely carry it in a Thunderwear rig. I mainly practice with .38's but occasionally use +P's to spice things up a little. You'll be very happy with it.

These hybrid M38s were originally made for the Michigan State Police. Some State Troopers are still carrying them as backup guns.

I was told the stainless cylinders were put on because the regular steel ones tended to rust due to troopers sweating on them.

I have one and like it quite a bit. I have had trouble finding ammo that shoots to point of aim in it however.

Info from Smith says my gun was made in 1979.
The guns aren't currently issued, but MI State Troopers who were issued them can continue to use them if they choose to.
I hear there aren't many left in service.
