i got 1911 armscor fired only 8rds..about a yr old. wanted to shift to revolver due to simplicity of use and reliability. is it worth? or should i instead keep my 1911? i bought the gun for my personal carry...

First off, Welcome to the forum!

Secondly, this is a HUGE downgrade, NOOOOOOOooooooooo!!! (I'm a little of a 1911 fan :D )

But in all seriousness, the handgun you carry is about two main things: cost and personal preference. MOST calibers loaded with modern ammo are going to be fairly effective for defence. If you feel that a 38 wheelgun is more to your taste; then by all means, get one.

Ben

ps. Just curious, why not the 1911?

That depends, are you going to shoot more than 8 rounds a year with the .38?
If so, then definately get the revolver.

depends on which side of the Isle..

1911 is in a class by itself... 38's are different animal. Fram a practical standpoint I see no reason why it is a downgrade... Even the most dedicated sim-auto handler should have at least one revolver.

With that said, I would suggest a good 4" 357 magnum... Smith & wesson, Ruger or such. The 357 will insure it's good and heavy enough and you'll can shoot 38's all day long in it.

When you trade a new (almost new) gun you will almost always face a loss in value on the trade in - just the nature of the market I think. However, if you are trading a gun that you don't shoot for a gun that you will shoot on a more regular basis that certainly changes the equation.

I agree with the post by Hal as it makes more sense to trade in for a .357 which opens up a wider variety of ammo to you including, of course, 38 special in its many forms.

Well , most would consider the caliber a downgrade anyway. i'm not sure I'd argue that point. However, a 1911 is not all that user friendly of a carry gun unless you spend allot of time to mastr it. ( Particularly if you wnat to carry it cocked and locked on a chambered round. )A revolver is simple and allot easier for most folks to use in a stressfull situation. You pull the trigger and it goes bang. Every time. No worries about manual and grips safeties, slides, mag releases, or jams.
FWIW, I own several of both and still feel the most comfortable with a .357/ .38+P revolver in the waistband. Of course, practice with either gun is advised to assure your rounds can go where you need them to.

I'll go along with the 357, but if you're going to carry, go for a snubby. I find it to be the perfect balance of comfort, concealability, and firepower. No buttons to fool with. It sounds like you already have a nice range gun. :D

Well, I suppose that a hit with a .38 is better than a jam/miss with a .45.

What is the specific problem with the 1911?

actualy im thinking about revo coz of simplicity and ease of carry esp the snub..not about the caliber. my concern about semi-auto esp 1911, are jam, accidental mag release, stoppage..etc.

of course i dont want this to happen when the time that i need it most. but why is it most folks recommend semi-auto compared to revo? they said revo is old and obsolete.

1911 in my humble opinion are about a bunch of civilians wanting to act like they are some high ranking military officer who carries the thing because he will never need it. Revolvers are work horses plain and simple. No safteys, ease of use, way more durable ect ect ect. I carry a S&W 642 in my pocket and love it. It is a 38 special rated for +p use and has not external hammer to snag. It is a breeze to clean and I feel way better about this that some cocked and locked 1911. I think they are just status symbols. I like things that are more utilitarian. Why I also just purchased a nice Ruger gp 100 4 inch 357 mag. I grew up loving Autos and had em my whole life. at the old age of 27 it took just one revoler for me to change my mind. And even when I did liek autos I didnt care for the 1911. Drop it and get a revolver. :)

actually right..1911 is more of a status symbol. people carrying got the feeling that they're above the rest. as they said 1911 separates men from boys.but why is it gun stores do recommend semi-autos compared to revo?

and most folks consider semi-autos as the standard for defense. one drawback i have w/ revo..is the loading issue. with revo reloading i find it a bit slower. correct me if im wrong

Semi autos tend to have a larger mag capacity, quicker reloads, and a slimmer profile for concealment.

Revolvers have a reputation for reliability, and simplicity of use, and tend to stand up to abuse and neglect farily well.

As to why I like my 1911, it has nothing to do with playing army or a status symbol. Thanks all the same for that great insight to my personality :barf: I like the 1911 becuase it can be customized to be exactly the gun I want it to be, at a price range I can afford. When my price range changes, there will still be more and new options available. It fits my hand very well, and is simple to operate and clean.

1911-style firearms are outstanding guns. However, learning to use one properly takes more training than other styles of autopistols, and A LOT more training than a revolver. Remember they are meant to be carried cocked & locked... round in chamber, hammer back, safety on.

The ammo/ reload thing isn't a big issue for me. I carry a .357 revolver, and 1 Bianchi speed strip... 12 rounds total. Many here carry more than that in 1 magazine for their auto, and then carry 1 or 2 extra mags. To my mind any situation where you need that many rounds is time call for close air support. The situations where they could arise are extremely rare, and probably the result of sticking your nose in where it doesn't belong. Remember, you're responsible for where every round you fire downrange at a badguy ends up.

If you're looking for a nightstand gun that you will never carry on your person, buy a 4" .357 (Ruger is my preference, S&W are good too), load it with some mid-range .38sp and have done with it. Shoot it at least 3-4 times per year, say at least 50 rounds each time.

If you're planning on carrying, either learn to use the 1911 properly, or ditch it for a weapon which matches the time you're willing to put in on it. IMO any weapon you carry daily should be shot at least monthly 50-100 rounds... and that's AFTER you've mastered it. A 1911 will take longer to "master" the workings of the gun than a revolver, but both still need to be shot enough that you hit what you're aiming at.

apologies

Hey all. I wanted to apologize for my previous remark about how I tend to view 1911 fans. It was a broad generalization that was unfair. I just tend to notice those traits in the few 1911 fans i know. It by no means represents EVERYONE! :)

1911 is not above all the rest

It's probably just well up there with most...and that from a gun that was designed and kept most of this for a hundred years...

I didn't understand all of your post and that you were planning to get rid of the 1911... depending on what brand and model you have... I wouldn't.

My original response was to ALSO have a good 357 revolver with 4 or 6" barrel.

If you are absolutely determined to get rid of the 1911 then for sure go out and try a '38' first... several and severl types of ammo too. 38's are going to be much easier to shoot than a 357 or 1911...but I've got several revolvers that take more of a "man" to shoot than even a 1911. One is even of a smaller caliber than 38. Everyone should shoot a 30 cal. carbine revolver once in their life.

actually my issue of shifting to revo is that 1911 or any other semi-autos are subject to jamm, stopage..etc..but revo is very much well-knowned for its reliability. revo has the reputation of point and shoot.

..here is my opinion...the Colt Gov't 45 is my favorite automatic..PERIOD!...I am looking into getting a second Gov't 45 and a 38 Super...BUT, the gun I chose for carrying (when I am inclined to do so)..is a Colt Detective Special 38...unless I am headed for a fight, I don't want to lug a 2 1/2 lb gun around with me consistantly....and another revolver I LOVE to shoot is a 4" bbl Colt Official Police...also 38 special...I will never agree with anyone who argues that the 38 is not worth consideration for defense...it is user-friendly to the shooter yet unfriendly to those who are shot....easily my favorite center-fire pistol cartridge to shoot...
