I am a N frame S&W owner, shooter, collector and caretaker. BillCA PMd me about a N frame this morning. I went to the site and looked around. I saw some 38/44s that had my attention. There was a Model of 1955 with factory detachable muzzle brake. BOING! K frames. A St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Model of 1905 S&W. 4th change, 38 Special with wagon top silver escutcheon grips. I had one. My uncle left it to me. It was his fathers revolver. It had seen roughly 50 years of duty between the two of them. I retired it with his badge, nametag and stripes on a wood plaque. Many years ago, it was stolen and never recovered. I had wanted to replace it but, you don't find too many with POLICE DEPT, ST. LOUIS, MO and a control number stamped on the backstrap. I was looking at one. I guess I am going to have to accept a substitute. Ser # is 5963XX, born on date? Thank you to BillCA!

SirWilliam:

The serial number range for your 1905 fourth change, falls into the years 1915-1942. For these years, the serial number range began at 241704 in 1915 and ended at 700,000 in 1942.

Congratulations on your great find!

Thanks! I had almost filed this search. Things can po up when you least expect them to. I know that my other revolver was made before the depression, probably 1927. This substitute is apparently from the same order. I think a S&W/Jinks letter is in order. I wonder if Leon Uniform is still in business?

Sir William,

You're welcome! It gives me great pleasure to know that you found something near & dear to your heart just from sending a simple PM to you. Please though, once you get that 1905 and clean it, please take some photos (or find someone to do it). I'd love to see it.

You mentioned Leon Uniform. These folks? :D

SirWilliam:

I'm also interested in an S&W 38/44! If any of these are still available, could you send me a private Email about these and give the condition, barrel length(s), and where these might be located? Thanks!

That is the place! I bought my first blues, leather, handcuffs, summer and winter coats/jackets and shoes from Leons. We still wore 8-point uniform caps then. Nostalgia.

There are some interesting S&Ws and Colts there. I am a N frame guy but, lately I have been grabbing K frames. Wonder why? It works out sometimes that there is nothing and then, deals are falling out of the sky!

Would this gun fall in that category? Ser. # is 4802xxx. Oh, and it shoots .38 ammo like a brand new gun.
