I found my dream revolver, the Security Six!

I just picked it up today locally. I wanted a 4" SS DA Ruger revolver. I tried out the newer offerings. I liked the Match Champion but damn what a price tag! The GP100 didn't feel right, too nose heavy. The SP101 didn't fit my hand. I had found a 3" Security Six a few weeks ago and liked the way it felt but wanted that extra inch as it looks more balanced. I found this beauty today and treated myself to a Christmas present.

It has some Pachmyer "Presentation" grips on it. They are okay but I'm thinking Hogue as this will be an open carry gun and maybe a set of original grips for when I get old and want to look at it and can't use it. What grips might have come on this revolver and where can I find them?

Congratulations! You have one fine revolver there.

My 2 3/4 Security Six is a favorite. I couldn't imagine getting rid of it.

congratulations! I'm an S&W man, but I appreciate the Security Six. The GP-100 is too much of a good thing.

Congrats on a great gun, I have one just like yours that came with the orginal wood grips and its a keeper for sure. I went with a set of Hogue laminate grips with checkering and they work great, I also picked up a pair of factory oversized grips from Ruger a few years ago and would use them if not for the Hogues. Here is a few pictures I found on the web of them, Rugers "found them in the attic" grips.

GyMac, i had a K frame that i let get away from me a few years ago. I loved that revolver and how accurate/smooth it was. My first handgun was a Dan Wesson SS .357 that I bought in my high school parking lot from one of my football team mates(early 80's). Cant get away with stuff like that nowadays

smee78, those aren't bad! I will search for a set. Its definitely getting Hogues for now. I like them on my SBH

Thats a good looking Blackhawk, I've missed a few of thoes long barrel versions. Someday the stars (and my wallet) will align and I will have money when I find another one for sale.:D

The Ruger on the right I got about 30 years ago (along with that 66-1 on the left.)

Eagle Secret Service stocks made for the Speed Six. I turned the Security Six to a RB configuration.

Both are excellent revolvers. The S&W a bit lighter, the Ruger a bit stronger.

You can't go wrong with either one.

Nice Ruger! I just picked up a stainless GP100 with 4" half lug bbl last week:

I love it! Was NIB with the black Hogue grips, but I switched them out for a set of the old wood insert compact grips.

Nice Six! I bought mine from a LEO who later switched to autos. He said it was His first service revolver. My Six and I have been on many adventures together; my regular hiking companion. I'm sure you'll find the same reliability and quality I found with mine.

You can find the date for your Security Six here.. http://www.ruger.com/service/productHistory/RE-SPSSix.html

Here is my 1979 light barrel Security Six.

Thanks everyone! I can't wait to shoot it. Mine appears to be a late 1980 model, I was 15 years old when this gun was new. Unlike its new owner, it has been used very little and cared for a lot LOL!

I do plan on finding some stock wooden grips for it but my plan is to use this gun as an open carry so its getting some good comfortable grips for now. I like the Pachmyer grips that are on there but they are looking much more dated than the gun does, they gotta go.

OP - <snip>It has some Pachmyer "Presentation" grips on it. They are okay but I'm thinking Hogue as this will be an open carry gun and maybe a set of original grips for when I get old and want to look at it and can't use it. What grips might have come on this revolver and where can I find them?

The gun was apparently designed for open carry by LEOs and security personnel, so most grips for it don't conceal very well. I was able to minimize the grip length (and printing) by getting the Herrett's Detective in minimum dimensions. It is open backstrap for short reach to the trigger and has a curl behind the trigger guard to save your knuckles from serious .357 loads. As grips go, the Herrett's were seriously expensive, especially since they were not custom fitted to my hand, just minimum spec.

The rubber grips pictured on there are actually quite good IMO, if just a range gun or for open carry.

Trust me, you don't want original grips unless you just want to look at the gun, not shoot it.

BTW I weighed my Security Six .357 4" yesterday, and it is 5.2 ounces lighter than my S&W 686 and only slightly heavier than my Interarms Rossi 971 VRC. To actually carry them, that seems enough to me to prefer the Security Six over the Smith for weight. The Smith wins on having a round butt grip that allows combat grips, the best for concealment.

When choosing a holster, it will be important to have good forward cant in order to pull that grip more vertical and less likely to poke out under your shirt.

Very nice Security Six. Many years ago when I first started getting into handguns I could have had several Security Sixes but thought they were a cheap knock off. Boy was I mistaken. Wish I knew then what I know now.

Nice Security-Six. I had one just like it, with Pachmayr Gripper grips on it. In an Uncle Mikes sidekick holster I considered it to be the ultimate knock around in the wood gun.
