I Finally Got An AR

Well I finally did it. I got a AR this past saturday. I Really like my Mini-14 rifles but I figured I'll try a new toy and got a 16" HB Bush Master with A3 top along with carry handle and scope mount that fits on the top of the carry handle. I figured this would give me option of mounting a scope, red dot sight or iron sight.

On sunday I took it to the range and shot about 70 rounds at 50 yards to sight-in the iron sight and red dot sight. So far my accuracy is not that good (2.5" with iron sight and 1.5" with red dot) but I expect it will get better as I get used to the trigger.

At the range I saw another guy with post ban Colt AR-15 but with M4 top. He had a grip mounted on the barrel handguard which made it much more comfortable when shooting standing up and been thinking about getting one for my rifle too but would this be legal on a post ban rifle? Also, does anyone make one can I mount without having a M4 handguard?

Finally, what high cap mags work well in these guns? I'm getting some GI 20 round mags but I would like to get some 30 round mags too. I've seem GI 30 round mags for $40 each and Thermold for $22. Does GI mag work that much better?

Any tips about these rifles to this new owner would be greatly appreciated.

Nice choice, taco.

I have a Bushmaster Dissapator Carbine with fixed carry handle that I recently ran 200 rounds thru for the first time. Not a glitch. The guy next to me with the Mini-14 kept having jams of all sorts and then his scope fell off during a shooting string!

As for high cap mags:
1) Teflon coated USGI 30rd
2) Thermold Zytel 30rd

I piled up on Thermolds at $8 each a couple of years ago. These work great. The Canadian Army uses them.

As for the fore-end grip, there are no legal ristrictions of any kind for rifles. Knight Armament Company makes a modular rail/handguard for the M4, but it costs a couple hundred bucks. I personally don't think it's worth the cash. Spend that cash on ammo and mags.

taco,

congrats on your new AR! I've got some new 20 & 30rd Thermolds as well as a few new USGI 30rd'ers I'm looing to sell. Shoot me an email if you're interested.

Stick with USGI 20 and 30 rounders. Go to ar15.com and shop on the mags for sale board. 30s go for about $15 to $20 and the 20s for around $20 to $25. The 20 rounders are more desirable for many because of the ability to hold position in prone shooting.

No need to spend the money on teflon coated mags. The usgi mags are moly coated and are just fine. The teflon coated mags are more collectors items from years past, unless they have been refinished.

As for Thermelt mags, I have a few I took in trade. I would never buy the damn things outright though. Stick with USGI mags.

8200 rpm: Well I guess I can forget about fore-end grip. For that kind of money I can buy another upper.

I got some magazines today. I traded one of my factory Mini-14 30 round mag for one GI 20 rounder, one GI 30 rounder and a 30 round Thermold mag. I'm going to try them all tomorrow to see how they work and what I want to stock up on for future.

Finally, I got 200 rounds of UMC ammo from local Walmart for $4.50 each. Tomorrow I'm going to try some of these UMC ammo along with some IMI, Norinco and S&B to see if there are any difference.

I'm beginning to like this AR :)

I recently ran a couple boxes of UMC 55gr. FMJ thru my Bushmaster without problem. I bought them about 3 years ago from BIG5, who knows how long it was sitting on their shelves.
