I finally decided that my first AR-15 will be a...

Bushmaster!

Now my question is which model Bushmaster?

I'm thinking of the XM15 M4 Type OR the XM15 ES2 Shorty.

In your opinion, which would be best for my first AR-15 for overall general use, or would you suggest another model?

Also, where can I get the best prices on Bushmaster on the Internet?

Thanks for your opinions.

Congratulations on your decision.
I actually favor my Bushmaster
shorty over my Colt pre ban with
its 20 inch bbl.
For general use, my advice is a
16 inch barrel unless you're contemplating
a lot of shooting over 150 yards.
We had a three gun shoot last weekend with the
longest distance at 150 yards. Everybody was
using a carbine length AR.

Good choice! For my first AR, I bought a Bushmaster XM15 AK shorty. It's the 16" barrel w/ the AK-style compensator. Well, actually it is a 14.5" barrel w/ a 1.5" permanently attached compensator. I love it! Mine is the flat-top w/ carry handle.

Enjoy it! It's a FUN rifle!

I would suggest getting a model that does not have a comp on the barrel. The comp makes the rifle loud, and you will lose velocity with a comp on a carbine. They may look cool, but you don't gain much by having one on an AR-15.

My $.02.

Good choice but now you have a bigger problem, which one?
Sites, no sites, flat top, carry handle, a1,a2,a3 upper, handguards....it is a jungle out there. Lions and Tigers and Bears oh my, which Bushmaster do I want.
I settled on a Vmatch 16 inch flat top with no sites but it took a lot of research to figure it out. Check out http://www.youngsguns.com or http://www.gunsonsale.com they have pic's of the models and good prices as well.
After I get the VMatch paid for I think I am going to have to have a DPSM Sweet Sixteen, just to say I have one of course.

Good luck

Buy local. Local shops, assuming you have some, need to sell things to stay in business. If you want them to be there in five years, patronize them now.

You're not going to save that much buying over the internet. By the time you pay trasfer fees, etc.,your only going to save $50.00 or so. And what if the gun you are sent isn't perfect? Do you send it back and pay shipping? What if you have minor function problems? The shop guy will probably be more motivated to see that you are a satisfied customer than some mail-order place.

Get out the phone book and call every gun shop in a sixty mile radious and see what's available.

I do agree about buying localy. I just refered the links for reference material. Pic's, different models ect, it was a help to me. I can buy my VMatch locally for less than paying frieght and FFL costs.
Then again I have made a friend as well who will help me, mags here and there, advice, help when you need it, hell they may even send you email someday about a great deal on 1000 rounds of Milsurp ammo for $50, kidding.
I know I sent Email to DPMS and they quoted me a price and at the same time told me I could buy a Panther Sweet Sixteen for less at the dealer, Localy.
That little bit right there meant a lot to me about the company and them taking care of there dealers. I will have a Panther in time for sure.

We were posting at the same time,so I didn't read your's till I was finished. I type slowly.:)

I wasn't referring to anything you said. I just think a lot of people think they save big bucks by going mail-order. You can usually save some, but I don't think it is that beneficial. I like patronizing the shops because of the reasons stated and other benefits as well.

If nothing else,Gun Shops are a great way to dream away an hour or so on a weekend. I spend as much money in them as I can so that I will have that opportunity in the future.

I am not sold on always buying locally. I've bought many guns directly from distributors and just had them sent to a local dealer for the $20 transfer. I've saved hundreds of dollars doing it. If I have a problem with the gun, then I go straight to the factory. Handling a problem through a dealer is a pain in the butt. the dealer isn't making any more money off of you and has very little intrest in helping...soooo, he ships your gun a week or more after you bring it in, charges you more shipping that it really costs, doesn't check on the gun after it's been gone a while so you have to call him to remind him, all sorts of crap. I like handling things myself, that way I know it gets done.

ReserveCop, a look in the latest CDNN catalog shows a Bushmaster Target V Match XM-15 E2S 20" HBAR with free case and Delta (whatever that is) Type 3-9x40 scope for $799.

They don't have an offer w/o scope.

Hey, I like the guys I deal with and what is $30 or $40 dollars? I agree, sorta cheap cover charge to look at, handle and sometimes even cop a quick feel (*)(*)
Down boys down, I was talking weapons. If at all possible suport your local guys.

I read Boston's Gun Bible recently (or, at least parts of it ...), and he makes a good case for the 16" Dissipator model, especially with the A3 (removable) handle. See page 10 of their downloadable catalog.

Main argument was the longer sight radius, and he makes the point well. I look forward to trying one of these someday.

Bushmaster does seem to have a 'bullet proof' reputation.

Congrat's on your choice. Regards from AZ

I have the 16" A2 Dissipator. I bought it originally because of the compact size due to the short barrel and the long sight radius. The one disadvantage I notice is that it is somewhat front-heavy.

Handle one and judge for yourself.

I have a Dissipator too. I agree that it is a little front heavy. I wish now I would have ordered one from the factory with a lighter barrel. I do like the longer sight radious. I have the A2 configuration as well. I don't think a removable carry handle offers a huge advantage for me. I think the factory sights do well enough out to 100 yards for defensive purposes and I can scope it if I am in the mood to shoot smaller groups. If I wanted to shoot competition,I'd buy a different AR configuration. Just some thoughts.
