I dont reccommend anyone use shellac on a mosin nagant anymore...

I 've put on 6 coats of Bullseye amber shellac on my M44 Mosin. After 7 rounds being put through the gun, the handguards with the shellac finish started melting off, the upper handguard started to bubble with the shellac finish.

After it dried up from the range session, it looked like a complete mess :(
 
How old was the shellac you used? It makes a difference...

And how long did you let it dry before shooting the rifle? Shellac is dry to the touch long before it's fully hardened, especially when multiple coats are applied in quick succession.
 
There are much better gun finishes than Shellac. Shellac is produced by an insect to protect itself from preditors...as such, it is no wonder that it makes a poor product for guns. The bug that makes it is not subject to the heat produced by firing cartridges.
