Well, today I took the plunge that Ive wanted to take for a long time. I paid 1/3 towards an M1A. I decided on the standard model with the walnut stock. It's a beautiful rifle! Hopefully I can get it out of layaway in a month or so.

Any recomendations on quality plinking ammo? Thanks!

JRiggs,
let me be the 1st too congragulates you on the new addition and I must say an excellent chose with the stock.

As for ammo, Radway, Portugeese are both excellent
I was warned to stay away from wolf and Cavim.....both are very dirty and well reek havoc with the gas system I hear.
Check the for sale forums at www.assaultweb.net and www.ar15.com for USGI mags at some good prices.

Congrats!!! Springfield has excellent customer service, as I've found out. The assualt rifle guncase is sweet.
Hint- don't "baby" your rifle when you get it like I did... Yank the bolt back nice and HARD and let it fly! For the first hundred rounds or so, like every rifle, you might experience some breaking-in jam-ups or quirks. No big deal. M1As are tight, the precision tolerances are close so it might take a few shells to break 'er in. I like the walnut stock. Yeah, the synthetic might be super sniper, but I can't shoot 1000 yards anyway so who cares. If you're used to shooting .308 bolt guns, you'll be pleasantly surprised how much recoil the cycling of the new round absorbs in this semi-auto. What a great gun, I love mine!

JRiggs...one other thing, get you a few tubes of Tetra Gun Grease for the bolt.....Works great. And maybe a Birch or used USGI walnut from Fred's for the beater days. Then rub the walnut stock with some Tung oil.

Good luck

Congratulations!! You've made a wise purchase. For a wealth of information, check out the M1A/M14 discussion forum at www.gunandknife.com

Make sure you pick up the following accessories ASAP:

Gas system wrench and cleaning drills
Tetra (or similar) gun grease
Dewey cleaning rod and muzzle guide

Some other suggestions:

A good leather (Turner) sling
Some tung oil for the stock
Plastic protective sight covers for front and rear
As many USGI mags as you can afford
Stripper clips
Good hard case

Good Shooting!

Congrats!! To add to the plinking ammo possibilities, I have had very good succuess with South African. And while you are waiting for the case of ammo you chose to be delivered, you can always get a few boxes of Federal American Eagle, or Winchester "White Box". Both are(relatively) inexpensive.

You should be very happy with it.
I've had mine for 5 years now and it's a wonderful shooting rifle.
Don't expect your M1A to shoot like an ace right out to the box. You'll need to put a hundred rounds or so through it before you'll start to see the real performance and accuracy the rifle is capable of.
Mine wouldn't shoot under 2" at 100 yards at first with any ammo. Occasionally it would produce a 1 1/2" group but not too often. Now she'll keep 5 shots under an inch and sometimes under 3/4"

Congrats,

TS
