I come here seeking knowledge

Okay, we all know the old adage, those seeking advice are only seeking an accomplice. I admit it, I am! :-D

I'm getting a 25-06 (Savage 112FVSS) and I was looking for an inexpensive scope to mount on that puppy. The rifle itself will only be used for plinking/target shooting (up to 600 yds, if I can anything at that range! :D) and perhaps deer. I am also going to use this rifle to "graduate" my significant other's oldest into a "real" caliber when the time comes in a few years.

I wasn't looking to put a lot of $ into the rifle/scope (my Rem Classic in .375H&H has that distinction, along with thumping me senseless from the bench last time out ;)), but I don't want to throw on a turd either. I was fingering about $150-175 tops and maybe something in that range with 1/4" minute click knobs. I have seen Simmons 44 Mags with the knobs and even Tasco WCPs.

What's everyone's opinion of theseor others and advice?

I would recommend going with the Simmons. They're pretty clear and fairly well constructed. And I think that they have a lifetime warranty but I'm not sure. A guy told me if something goes wrong with a Simmons you can send it back and they'll fix it or replace it no questions asked...but that might be hearsay

I've got a Tasco World Class on top of my Savage 110 Tactical in .308, and it makes three touching holes at 100 yards.

$50 more gets you a Leupold Vari-X II 3x9x40 gloss at Midway---Actually $223.99 gloss--------$226.99 matte finish plus shipping-----Stay away from the Tasco and Simmons junk. And Leupold has the best warranty in the business and stands behind what they make. Almost forgot---Made in the U.S.A. too.

And Leupold has the best warranty in the business and stands behind what they make.

With all due respect, Tasco's warranty is a fix-or-replace. And that's even if YOU are at fault. I find it hard to believe that there is a BETTER warranty than that. Just as good, in all likelihood, but not better.

Stay away from the Tasco and Simmons junk

Wow, Tasco is junk, huh? Seems to me the Tasco SS at SWFA is the only rifle scope under $900 that can survive being mounted on a .50BMG, and even winning the Long Range Challenge (.50BMG) at the Canadian Fullbore Rifle Championships, twice. They have also recived excellent write ups on several websites, like Sniper Country, Tactical Shooter and are indorsed by Serbu Firearms. The scope I listed is a contract model built in Japan. While it's not a Lightforce, Zeiss or Swarovski, it doesn't cost a quater as much and is at least as good as a Leupold. Certainly not "junk" by any stretch of the imagination.

A Tasco 3-9 World Class with mil-dot reticle sits atop my Savage 10FP and regularly lets me embarass $500 scopes. Not bad for $69.95 at Midway.

Simmons does stand behind their products. I got a cheap 1.5 X 4.5 with a used gun. After a couple years it clouded up and Simmons replaced it free. As far as which one to get, I am coming to believe it's a roll of the dice as far as reliability goes. You get what you pay for in optical quality and in your price range you can get a decent one.

Tasco scopes

As long as you stay with the Tascos built in Japan you will do all right. The ones made in China, Maylasia, etc., are not of the same quality IMHO.

I'll have to remember that the next time I scope up one of my numerous 50 cal's to go deer hunting. Or maybe he needs some $1000 gee--whiz mil-dot tactical scopes with his .25-06 deer shooter. Endorsed by Serbu Firearms---sounds kind of like Ford endorsing Firestone. BTW--Serbu--Who?????????

What we are talking about is scope in this price range. For $225 he can have a scope that will given to the grandkids. For $50 less he can get a scope and keep wondering is this the season it goes out on me.

Good luck on "plinking" out to 600 yds with anybody's 3X9 scope! Of course, the Leupold is of better quality than Tasco and Simmons. If you can afford a Vari-X-III in one of the higher powers, with target turrets, have at it.

I have a Tasco World Class TS 8-32X44mm mounted on one of my varmint rifles. At the mid-range to lower powers, the scope's relatively clear; however, at the higher powers, it's cloudy.

I also have a Simmons Gold Metal Sil. 6-20X44mm mounted on one of my varmint rifles. The Simmons scope is more expensive than the Tasco (around $375), but the difference in quality is astronomical. The Simmons GMS is crystal-clear at all powers, with both target and tactical knobs included with the scope.

Also have a Burris Signature 8-32X44mm (around $475). I bought the Burris used for $250; sent it back to Burris, they refurbished it free. It's a great scope, but the adjustable objective is too tight to be adjusted, while I'm looking through the scope. Might send it back to Burris.

Now for the Suprise Scope!! I bought a Simmons Whitetail Classic in 6-20X50mm from Midway for under $100. While it doesn't have 1/8 m.o.a. turrets, as do my other scopes, it does have an adjustable objective and is as clear as any scope through which I've peered. I don't know if it'll stand up to heavy recoil, but I'm using it on my Bushy, so it's not subjected to heavy recoil.

Um, thats 50BMG (as in Browning Machine Gun). You shoot deer with 50BMG? Serbu Firearms makes 50BMG rifles. Target shooting at 600 yards as was stated in the original post is best accomplished with a high-powered target scope, certainly not a scope with less than 10x! BTW, the Tasco SS scope I was refering to cost $299, significantly less than $1000. Try mounting a Leupold on a Barrett or AR50 and see what happens. The point is, if a Tasco scope that costs under $300 can take abuse that rifles 3 times as much can't, it is not junk. The scope I recommended is $179, and yeah, you can "keep wondering is this the season it goes out on me" because someone on the internet put it in your mind that all Tascos are junk or you can save yourself $50 and get a better scope and shoot.

Oh come on boyz, play nice. The best scope we all know is... iron sights! (J/K!)

I like Burris myself, but I have to admit, on a non-biased test, I looked through a Leupold, Simmons, and a Tasco, and the Leupold was better quality glass. Notice I said glass, the frame etc.. I can't really tell, and I'm not sure if the fact that the Leupold looked maybe 10-20% brighter makes all that big of a difference on a 3-9x scope.

I personally generally go Burris...

Well, its been 6 years since I mounted my 6.5x20 50mm Simmons piece of trash on my Rem 700 VS .308. Had a choice to make-get a great, accurate rifle (which it is) and not get a Leupold which, in the same magnification, was going to cost more than a rifle, or get the Leupold and a cheap rifle. I would like to have the high dollar scope my rifle so richly deserves, but eating is a bad habit I picked up as a child. Go ahead and slam my choice-I'm cutting 1/4" groups and, and its put 3 deer in the freezer every year since I bought the scope (previous was too cheap-a Bushnell with a bad reticle which broke), and if I'm missing out, guess I'll suffer, but I sure won't go hungry! When the scope fails, I might be looking at a Leupold while Simmons is fixing my scope for free, but so far, even dropping my rifle (sling broke loose) has yet to kill it. My 10.22 has a 3x9 32mm Simmons and the same holds true. Many of my poor friends have Simmons and I have yet to see a failure on theirs. Bottom line-I want the scope to WORK, not something I have to send back.

Yow... I ask for advice for an inexpensive scope for a "beater" 25-06 and the battle lines are drawn. Golly!

I'm thinking about yanking my 3-12x52 Tasco from my H&H and putting that on the 25-06 and putting a Leupold 2-7 Vari-X II on the H&H. Dave, my local gun dealer, gave me a price of $230 on the Leupold. I finger that's a better setting for the .375.

For what it is worth, my Tasco has eaten up the recoil of my H&H and has not wimpered at all, I only the other hand am not as durable. ;) :D At high magnification the image is a little blurry, but in all honesty I never crank that puppy up that high and the scope has met all my needs.

My 300 Win Mag had a Leupold on, and it goes without saying that the Loopies are great scopes. Just more then what I'm looking to spend on this rifle and the rifle's uses.

BTW, I thought I saw a dare there shooting a 3 power at 600 yards. . . you triple dog dare me and I'll do it! Where's my 22lr? Let's really make it interesting! :D
